MAN VS. ANIMALS
However,
• CULTURE CANNOT DEVELOP WITHOUT – COMMUNICATION
(Man’s ability to communicate)
• Animals do not possess culture because they do not have
language.
• Animals cannot learn, but they can be trained; only man can
learn.
• Only man has language and only through language can we
transmit culture through learning process.
FUNCTION OF LANGUAGE

COMMUNICATION

It is the process through which a set of meaning embodied in a message is

conveyed to a person or persons in such a way that the meanings received
are equivalent to those which the initiator of the message is intended
(Lundberg, 1963:200).
LANGUAGE

• To most people, language means talk, or speech or

conversation.
• It its broad meaning, it is a means of transmitting
messages from one person to another.
• Generally accepted meaning - it is a means of
communicating thoughts and ideas.
LANGUAGE IS NOT LIMITED TO
WORDS = Gestures, the tone and
inflection of the voice, the use of
symbols and behaviour for
communicating messages.
Teachers show displeasure by certain
gestures such as:
1. Focusing the eyes on the offender and by a glum face
2. Stern look
3. Or a shake of head
2. APPROVAL is manifested by a smile, a tap
on the shoulder and a kind of approving look

3. POSITIVE RESPONSE
• Nod of the head
• Clapping of hands or handshake
BODY LANGUAGE/KINESICS – a
system of communication through
motion or using patterns of
postures, facial expressions and
body motion.
THE CURRICULA OF THE SCHOOLS HAVE PLACED GREAT
EMPHASIS ON COMMUNICATION ARTS AND RIGHTLY SO.
• FOR HOW CAN LEARNING TAKE EFFECT SUCCESFULLY
WITHOUT ESTABLISHED MEANS OF
COMMUNICATION?
• HOW CAN WE TRANSMIT LOVE, RESPECT,
AFFECTION, ETC., WITHOUT LANGUAGE?
