National Science Education Philosophy
In consonance with the NEP, science education in Malaysia nurtures a
Science and Technology Culture by focusing on the development of individuals who are COMPETITIVE, DYNAMIC, ROBUST , RESILIENT and able to master SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE and TECHNOLOGICAL COMPETENCY. Relation between philosophy and education I. Philosophy and aims of education: Aims of education are determined by aims of life. II. Philosophy and curriculum: Philosophy determines the aim of education and curriculum determines how these aims can be attained. III. Philosophy and textbooks: Philosophy is reflected in the content material of textbooks. About Science 1. Three element that important to ensure a quality of science education: i.Knowledge: Enables students to understand the world around them. ii. Skills : Thinking skills, thinking strategies and scientific skills. iii. Scientific attitudes and moral values 2. Process that emphasis inquiry and problem solving. Therefore, knowledge is acquired as the product of investigation and scientific inquiry is required to develop student attitudes and noble values. Science syllabus outline • Are designed: i. To provide opportunities for students to acquire scientific knowledge and skills. ii. To inculcate noble values and love for the nation towards developing a future generation which is capable of contributing to the harmony and prosperity of the nation and its people. The science curriculum in Malaysia school • Are designed for students from primary and secondary school. • Aims: Producing an active learner. By give an opportunity to the pupils to observe , ask questions, formulate and test hypotheses, analyse, interpret data, report and evaluate finding. • Comprises with 3 core subject and 4 elective science subject. i. Core subject : - Offered at the Primary school , lower and upper secondary school. ii. Elective subject: - Offered at the upper secondary school. - Biology, Physics, Chemistry and additional science. • Elective science subject: - Prepares students who are more scientifically inclined to pursue the study of science at post-secondary level. • Core science subject (Primary and secondary levels): - Are designed to provide student with basic science knowledge, prepare students to be literate in science, and enables to continue their science education at the upper secondary level. • Core Science (Upper secondary level): - Are designed to produce students who are literate in science, innovative and able to apply scientific knowledge in decision- making and problem solving in everyday life. Teaching of Science (1) Constructivist (2) Mastery learning science (3) Science process skills (4) Student-centered learning (5) The integration of information and communication technology (ICT)
