IN THE PREVIOUS CHAPTER

 We talked about “ language behaviour” from the social point of view; 1)

The function of the language in establishing social relationships; 2) Role
played by the language in conveying information about the speaker.

There is a close inter-relationship between the language and society .

 We also learned “variation in the way people use a language” due to

social class differentiation.

 Today , we’re about to focus on language in relation to ethnic identity.

LANGUAGE AND
ETHNIC GROUP
 Language is a system that consists of the development,
acquisition, maintenance and use of complex systems of
communication, particularly the human ability to do so; and a
language is any specific example of such a system.

 An ethnic group or ethnicity is a socially defined category of

people who identify with each other based on common
ancestral, social ,cultural or national experience.
FACTORS THAT MAKE UP
ETHNICITY

 Language and Location

A people group description includes at least one language and
at least one location, such as country as a country. a district or a town
where they live.
 Religion
Religion is one primary ethnic characteristic that may be strong
that it cause a definite boundary within a group of person that are
otherwise identical
LANGUAGE AND ETHNICITY

 The relationship between language and self-identity is sometimes

hard to discover. There are some examples of the relationship
between language and other cultural characteristics:

Multi-Lingual Ethnic Groups

 Multi-Ethnic language groups

MULTI-LINGUAL ETHNIC
GROUPS

 A multilingual ethnic group is an ethnic group which has

various subgroups with different primary languages. These sub
groups consider themselves one ethnic group due to shared or
common ancestry, culture and/or history.
MULTI-ETHNIC LANGUAGE
GROUPS

 is a category of people who identify with each other based

on similarities such as common language.

 Batak , Sunda, Jawa, and other ethic groups in indonesia

use indonesian besides their local language
ETHNIC GROUPS
AND VARIANT OF LANGUAGE

 Ethnic groups in American use the same language: English, but with

their own dialect.

 Approach development of this situation:

 Use standard language-elimination of non standard speech

(non-standard dialect)

 Bidialectism

 Appreciation of dialect differences
