URBAN AND CITY NODES Irene

kavalak
What is a NODE?
It is the
concentration of
activities in a city
In urban planning and design, a n
ode can be,

v A GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION
oNeighborhoods, intersections, r
oadways

v A SITE OF ACTIVITY AND INTERACTION

o Commercial & business corridors
, public squares, civic center
s, parks

v
A LOCATION OF INTEREST THAT ATTRACTS
PEOPLE
oHistoric landmarks, libraries,
churches, community centers
ACCESSIBILITY / CONNECTIVITY
NODES

Relate to locations that

transfer passengers and
freight,

 include terminals such as

ports, rail stations, airports
and distribution centers

Most cities owe their initial

development to a location
that grants access to local,
regional and/or
international circulation,
commonly a port site

Accessibility nodes are often

dependent on the specific
geographical requirements
of each transport nodes,
notably in terms of space
consumption

ECONOMIC NODES

Refer to locations that

perform a function of
economic significance
 MAJOR NODES are places where there is a
perceived area of continuous activity
surrounded by a building density that
supports it
 MINOR NODES are areas where activity
and density are anticipated to increase
over time
 Nodes can vary in size/scale from a bu
ilding or intersection to a neighborhoo
d or city
 Nodes are those places where people and
transportation routes congregate
 Nodes are generally located at points
where two or more transit routes or
travel modes intersect
Characteristics of Nodes:
These nodes should occur where
single uses or a combination of
uses lead to higher levels of
pedestrian activity
Pedestrian nodes should include
such furnishings as drinking
fountains, trash cans and benches
to increase the users sense of
comfort Seating should be
arranged to accommodate groups
of people
Careful thought should be given
to the amount of seating provided
because too much unused seating
may detract from the goal of
creating an active area
According to KEVIN ANDREW LYNCH,
an American Town Planner and
Author, has arrived at the
perpetual form of urban
environments

•Landmark
•District
•Node
•Edge
•Path
•NODES are points, the strategic
spots in a city into which an
observer can enter and which are
the intensive foci to and from
which he is travelling

•They may be primarily junctions,

place of a break in
transportation, a crossing of
convergence of path, moments of
shift from one structure to
another

•Indeed conceiving the environment

at a National or International
level, then the whole city itself
may become a node
