EDVARD MUNCH

Basic Information
 Born: 1863 in Loton, Norway.
 Died: 1944 in Oslo, Norway.
 Mother died of Tuberculosis when he was 5.
 8 years later, sister died of Tuberculosis as well.
 His father was strong Puritan and often enforced his
strict religious discipline on Edvard.
 These traumatic childhood
experiences had a profound effect
on his outlook on life, which in turn
affected his painting style.

Artistic Career
 Began at the School of Art in Oslo under naturalist
painter Christian Krohg.
 Munch started off as a realist/naturalist.
 Toured Paris in 1885
 Influenced by works of impressionists/symbolists like
Rembrandt, Seurat, Gaughin, Van Gogh, etc.
 Turned into an expressionist/symbolist.
 Lived mainly in Berlin, Paris, and Oslow,
continuing to paint expressionist and
symbolist paintings until his death.

 The Sick Child (1885)


 Beginning of Munch’s break with Realism.
Influences, Styles, Mediums
 Influenced mainly by Christian Krohg and Frits
Thaulow.
 No students, didn’t want to be called a master.
 Major influence on the Expressionist movement.
 Medium: oil painting, lithograph, etcher, and wood
engraving, but mostly painting.
 Themes: life, love, fear, jealousy, drinking, sex,
sickness, death, and melancholia – basic human
experiences and emotions.
 Painted mostly people.
 Always an emotionless or negative mood in his
paintings. The people are never smiling.
 The Scream (1893)
Munch’s most famous painting, a Mona Lisa of modern
art. It expresses how he feels about life and his outlook
on humanity, fearful and uncertain.
 Evening on Karl Johan Street (1889)
 Death in the Sick Room (1895)
 The Dance of Life (1899-1900)
Expresses the beauty, innocence, relationship, love, and
eventual death that is all experienced throughout life.
 Ashes (1894)
