EMPLOYER PERCEPTIONS

TOWARDS GRADUATE TO BE
HIRED
Objective (AMIN)
• To find out what experience is really meant to be for employers and
graduates
• To investigate if there any difference in hiring graduates in this three
different areas
• Suggest to the future fresh graduates to enable them meet the
demand of employers and needs of a changing global business
environment
Why is it important
• Most people will be successful in their job hunt if they have work
experience.

Recent research study by Highfliers proved that "graduates who have

had no previous work experience at all are unlikely to be successful
during the selection process and have little or no chance of receiving a
job offer for their organisations’ graduate programmes.“

• If you haven’t got a clue what career you want to do, work
experience is a perfect way to sample all the career options out
there.
What is Experience (sut)
• (the process of getting) knowledge or skill from doing, seeing, or
feeling things. ( Cambridge English Dictionary)
• In job related scope, experience in lieu of some educational
requirements, or non-paid experience, like an internship or volunteer
work, in place of paid work experience. (Alison Doyle, 2016).
• Work experience gently introduces you to the world of work.

Learn the do’s and don’ts and what not.

• It will help to identify your own skills and perhaps even highlight the
areas that you might want to work on.

Give you a good understanding of your strengths and weakness.

Performance vs Experience
(fiq)
• Performance is an important criterion for
organizational outcomes and succes
• how to obtain it? It is varies and depend on the
person it self as such: lawyers, the skill is upon
themselves.
• While it is true from the perspective of the employer
they want the experience worker as it is the bonus
for them to have qualify person.
• But it's not a fixed thing. For example for engineering employer, there's
a period with new engineers who have two years of experience, but less
than eight, when they can realize what has and hasn't worked before—
and yet they are not so burned by experience that they can't see the
hope in trying new things and new strategies.
• Experience as the sum of a few factors: time working, experiences
survived, the nature of the role and responsibilities, and potential
lessons learned – answered by employer
What can the graduates do to have this attributes
(ZAM)
• Use a network and join professional groups
-Nowadays, networking is one of the best ways to attract employers. If you create
professional profiles on this site and a few others, you might be able to draw the
attention of recruiters in your field.

• Volunteer
-If you decide to pursue a volunteer opportunity, look for one in your field. You won't get
paid for the work you do, but you will gain relevant job experience and access to
networking.

• Seek out an internship related to your field

- If you didn't do an internship when you were in college, it may be worth considering
now that you're ready, willing and able to work. Internships don't always pay the best,
but they do provide the kind of hands-on job experience that employers like to see.
• Freelancing
- Sometimes you have to prove that you can do the work
before you are hired. Freelancing is a great way to show
what you can do. You may have to do your first freelance
job for free or low pay, just to gain the experience and
positive reference.
Does it matters? (PUDIN)
According to Jessica Simko (2015), having education and experience gets
you in the door but as you may have noticed, it doesn’t get you hired.

Most importantly, are we the person they want to work with every day?

The answer rest in you.

Key point from the interview
• As per Mr Taxin of Maybank stated during the interview,
• ‘to get us the job, start with the attitude’.
• ‘to excel, do not wait for the job to come to you, be dedicated and
learn more as you could’.
• ‘Both of them (experience and good pointer) are equally important’.
• In contrast, for SPA
• per Mr Hafidzul of SPA..
• ‘regardless of what have you been through, how much of experience
you gained, it doesn’t matter. The most important aspect evaluated in
public sector is to have a good pointer’
• ‘accepted that fresh graduates doesn’t have any experience
elsewhere in job industry except for internship program during
university time’.
• ‘we evaluated the job applicant from several phases, if they pass all
the phases set up by the panel, they will eventually get the job’
Conclusion (haziq)
• Experienced does play a great influence especially towards the
employers to evaluate the potential employees on paper ( resume,
CV).
• However, as discussed above it is only the added value to secure the
interview in front of the door, but what matters is you yourself ( the
attitude). Every single thing if done with proper attitude, will pave the
way to success.
• Hence, graduates shall have both experience + attitude to increase
their employability.

Experiences
- For the public sector, experiences are not needed and equally
evaluated.
- For the private sector, experiences are vital and play important roles

Experience VS Salary

For the public sector, salary are not effected by the

experiences and according to grades.
Private sector is evaluated based on performance and expriences,
thus each individual will be different.
