INTRODUCTION TO ANTENNA

 An antenna is the interface between radio waves propagating through

space and electric currents moving in metal conductors, used with a
transmitter or receiver.
 In transmission, a radio transmitter supplies an electric current to the
antenna's terminals, and the antenna radiates the energy from the current
as electromagnetic waves (radio waves).
 In reception, an antenna intercepts some of the power of an
electromagnetic wave in order to produce an electric current at its
terminals, that is applied to a receiver to be amplified.
 Antennas are essential components of all radio equipment, and are used
in radio broadcasting, broadcast television, two-way radio,
communications receivers, radar, cell phones, satellite communications
and other devices.
TYPES OF ANTENNAS

PHYSICAL STRUCTURES: FREQUENCY OF OPERATION:

1. Wire antennas 1. Very Low Frequency(VLF)
2. Aperture antennas 2. Low Frequency(LF)

3. Reflector antennas 3. Medium Frequency(MF)

4. Lens antennas 4. High Frequency(HF)

5. Very High Frequency (VHF) (f) Ultra High
5. Microstrip antennas Frequency(UHF)
6. Array antennas 6. Super High Frequency (SHF)
7. Microwave.
MICROSTRIP PATCH ANTENNA

 In telecommunication, a microstrip antenna (also known as a printed antenna) usually means

antenna fabricated using microstrip techniques on a Printed Circuit Board (PCB).
 They are mostly used at microwave frequencies. An individual microstrip antenna consists of a
patch of metal foil of various shapes (a patch antenna) on the surface of a PCB, with a metal
foil ground plane on the other side of the board. Most microstrip antennas consist of multiple
patches in a two-dimensional array.
 The antenna is usually connected to the transmitter or receiver through foil microstrip
transmission lines.
 The radio frequency current is applied (or in receiving antennas the received signal is produced)
between the antenna and ground plane.
 Microstrip antennas have become very popular in recent decades due to their thin planar
profile which can further corporate into the surfaces of consumer products, aircraft and
missiles; their ease of fabrication using printed circuit techniques; the ease of integrating
the antenna on the same board with the rest of the circuit, and the possibility of adding
active devices such as microwave integrated circuits to the antenna itself to make active
antennas.
 The most common type of microstrip antenna is the patch antenna. Antennas using
patches as constitutive elements in an array are also possible.
 A patch antenna is a narrowband, wide- beam antenna fabricated by etching the antenna
element pattern in metal trace bonded to an insulating dielectric substrate, such as a
printed circuit board, with a continuous metal layer bonded to the opposite side of the
substrate which forms a ground plane.
FEEDING METHODS OF ANTENNA:
LINE FEED MICROSTRIP ANTENNA
PROBE FEED MICROSTRIP ANTENNA
PROXIMITY FEED MICROSTRIP ANTENNA
APERTURE COUPLED FEED MICROSTRIP
ANTENNA
WHY APERTURE FEED?

 In this project, we are using aperture coupled feed Microstrip Antenna as it

offers following advantages over other feeding mechanisms:
 Low cross polarization.
 Easier to model.
 Moderate spurious radiations.
TRI BAND PATCH ANTENNA
 A multi-band device (including dual-band, tri-band, quad-band and penta-band devices) is a
communication device (especially a mobile phone) that supports multiple radio frequency bands.
 All devices which have more than one channel, use multiple frequencies; a band however is a
group of frequencies containing many channels.
 Multiple bands in mobile devices support roaming between different regions where different
standards are used for mobile telephone services.
 Where the bands are widely separated in frequency, parallel transmit and receive signal path
circuits must be provided, which increases the cost, complexity and power demand of multi-band
devices.
 tri-band patch antenna with broadside radiation for each band using the fundamental TM10 mode
together with modified TM20 and TM30 modes is presented.
 frequency control and radiation pattern are adjusted by changing the slot dimensions and location
and the stub length. These changes affect the field distributions of T10, T20 and T30 modes
independently of each other.
FILTERING IN TRI BAND ANTENNA
 After experimentation it is found out that:
1. The stub length has an effect on the resonant frequencies of the TM10 and TM20 modes,
whereas it has little influence on the TM30 mode.
2. location of the slot can be used to realize a tuning of the TM30 mode without affecting the
other two modes.
 So, Changing the dimensions of the slot, such as length and width, can affect all the three
resonances as these changes perturb the current distributions of all the three resonances.
 All these perturbations give flexibility for frequency tuning.
 One can increase the second resonance independently through decreasing the width or
length of the slot (ws1) and then adjust the location of the slot (ls3) to keep the third
resonance unchanged. Because the second and third resonance can be controlled
independently, the first resonance can also be tuned independently by changing the patch
length or stub length.
METHODOLOGY
SOFTWARE USED (H.F.F.S)

 H.F.S.S ( High frequency structural simulator)

 A 3D electromagnetic (EM) simulation software for designing and simulating high-
frequency electronic products such as antennas, antenna arrays, RF or microwave
components, high-speed interconnects, filters, connectors, IC packages and printed circuit
boards.
 Through integration with ANSYS thermal, structural and fluid dynamics tools, HFSS
provides a powerful and complete multi-physics analysis of electronic products, ensuring
their thermal and structural reliability.
 Engineers worldwide use ANSYS HFSS to design high-frequency, high-speed electronics
found in communications systems, radar systems, advanced driver assistance systems
(ADAS), satellites, internet-of-things (IoT) products and other high-speed RF and digital
devices.
