Workshop
The DHS Program, funded by USAID and implemented by ICF
Bangkok, Thailand, March 6-17, 2017
Scope of work
The purpose of this fellowship is to develop the capacity of the
Fellows and their universities to use data collected by the
Demographic and Health Surveys Program

The principal products of the fellowship will be:


• An original joint research paper on a topic that the
respective team proposed based on DHS data;
• A series of capacity-building activities to promote and
enhance the use of DHS data in academic courses,
faculty seminars, or another context at the Fellows’
universities
By the end of the workshop, everyone will:
1. Know more about DHS surveys and what data files and
variables they contain
2. Know DHS standards for organizing and storing data
3. Understand DHS sample design, what weights are, and
how to use them
4. Be able to use Stata to open DHS datasets, find variables,
recode variables and run frequencies and crosstabs
By the end of the workshop, everyone will:
5. Be able to merge different data files to meet analysis needs
6. Be able to understand and adjust the effect of complex sample
design
7. Be able to run and interpret regression results
8. Have successfully finalized your group research question,
created a conceptual framework, identified variables of interest
and determined analytical method
9. Have refined the team capacity-building plan and decided on
the implementation of at least one activity for building capacity
in using DHS data in your department/school before the
second workshop
Requirements and schedule, part I
• March 6-17: Attend and satisfactorily complete the two-
week DHS Data Users workshop in Bangkok.
• April 11: Last date to submit a full draft of the research
paper. Groups should submit a short statement about what
each group member contributed to paper (programming,
analysis, writing, literature review, etc.). All members of
each team are expected to submit identical drafts.
• April 20: Last date to submit the first report on capacity-
building activities implemented at home university
• April 25-May 4: Second Fellows’ workshop in an Asian
country (TBD) to revise and polish manuscripts
Requirements and schedule, part II
• June 5: Submit a final, publishable-quality research paper.
All members of each team are expected to submit identical
drafts.
• June 5-Aug 30: Respond to suggestions and revisions
from reviewers and the editor during the production
process.
• August 14: Last date to submit the second report on
capacity-building activities implemented at home
university.
• September 30: Last date to submit the evidence that
your paper has been submitted to a journal and entered
the review process
First Workshop: Project Activities
• Revise research questions in consultation with facilitators
• Formulate a conceptual framework; review literature
• Identify key variables and conduct preliminary analysis
• Present research questions, conceptual framework,
literature and analytical method to the big group.
• Work closely with the co-facilitator assigned to the team.
• Present preliminary results at the end of the workshop
• Also have a nice time and network with your
colleagues and other fellow participants

• We are here for you so make sure to ask any of


the 4 facilitators if anything is unclear.
A note about these goals
• There is a lot to cover
• In order to achieve everything listed on the agenda, we need
commitment from everyone
• Deliverable deadlines are very tight
• Give the workshop your full attention from 8am- 4pm
– Come on time in the morning
– Use breaks and time after 4pm for your other work,
phone calls, texts emails, facebook, etc

Participant roles
• During this workshop we will have a:
• Workshop Chair/President:
– Their roles include:
• Making sure everyone comes back from coffee and
lunch breaks in a timely fashion
• Helps facilitate the morning review session
• Make announcements on some logistics
• Who wants be our first workshop chair?
Parking lot
The parking lot is a place for participants to post questions
throughout the workshop. Please use the sticky notes on
your table.
Questions for the parking lot include:
• If something was not clear and you would like more
explanation
• If you have a question you don’t want to ask in front of the
group
• If there is a question but the facilitators can’t answer it at
that moment they will put it on the parking lot so that we
don’t forget to answer it

Pre-workshop assessment
• The purpose of this assessment is to
– 1) help us gear the pace of lectures and hands-on
practice;
– 2) to provide a baseline for assessing the
effectiveness of the workshop.
• Please answer all questions to the best of your ability
in the next 45 minutes
• Please do not use internet, course materials, or ask
your neighbors for assistance
• Email everyone the pre-test
