GROUND FLARE

- The type which has been used almost exclusively is the multijet flare
(enclosed types)
- Smokeless operation as well, but with essentially no noise or
luminosity problem, provided that the design gas rate to the flare is not
exceeded.
- However, since the flame is near ground level, dispersion of stack
releases is poor and this may result in severe air pollution or hazard if
the combustion products are toxic or in the event of flame-out.
- Capital and operating cost and maintenance requirements are high.
Enclosed Ground Flares

 To provide smokeless operation inside of a combustion chamber that

completely conceals the flare flame
 The combustion chamber is refractory lined to provide long service
life and significantly reduced noise levels
 Typically installed in crowded areas of a plant, in close proximity to
other processing equipment
Advantages

 Clean, smokeless burning for a range of flare gas compositions

 No radiation outside the unit
 No visible emissions
 Low noise
 No air or steam assist required
Liquid Flare
• Dispose of off-specification, excess, or production liquids
• Safe and effective method for disposing of waste.

Liquid Flare systems operate to dispose of wastes from the following

applications:

• Flare system knockout drums

• Lubricating fluids
• Pipelines
• Other applications
Multi-Point Ground Flare
• flare gases are usually very heavy of waste gas.
• are designed and engineered to meet specific process requirements for
pressure, flow, radiant heat, noise, and flame visibility control

Typical Applications
• Plants in densely populated, residential, or environmentally sensitive
areas
• Very high capacity flare systems where elevated flares are impractical
• Near airports where elevated flares are unsuitable

SIZING OF GAS RELIEF LINES - FLARE

• All flare lines shall be designed to keep the

ρV2 < 200 000 kg/ms2 criteria.

• It also included PSV line/piping.

• Where the ρV2 criteria will not be met, additional calculations will be
required to document that the selected pipe size is still acceptable. This
involves evaluating piping stress levels, supporting, noise etc.
The selection of piping specification must consider the effect of acoustic fatigue,
which are affected by factors such as:

• relative differential pressure in upstream restriction device

• temperature in the flowing gas
• molecular weight of flowing gas
• pipe diameter and wall thickness
• mass flow rate
