History of Infosys Technologies Ltd.

Infosys Technologies Ltd. is a software development company with headquarters in

Electronics City, Bangalore, India, an area known as 'India's Silicon Valley' for its
concentration of high-tech multinational and Indian companies. Cofounded by Chairman
and CEO N.R. Narayana Murthy, Infosys Technologies has accomplished a number of firsts
for an Indian company, including becoming the first to be listed on an American stock
exchange and the first to offer an employee stock option plan (ESOP). About 500 employees
have become millionaires as a result of the company's ESOP. In 2000 the firm's international
client base included 200 American firms, for which Infosys Technologies provided software
for enterprise resource planning (ERP), Y2K compliance, electronic commerce, and other
applications.

Early History: 1980s

Infosys Technologies Ltd. was founded in 1981 in Bangalore, India, by N.R. Narayana
Murthy and seven other software engineers with a combined investment of about $1,000. One
of eight children of an Indian village official, Murthy would emerge as the company's
chairman and CEO. He became regarded as the most highly esteemed manager in India, due
in part to his mathematical abilities and Western style of management. The company opened
its first international office in the United States in 1987.

3
Favorable Business Climate: 1990s

Following a series of economic reforms in India in 1991, Infosys Technologies began to grow
more rapidly. It became a public limited company in 1992, with an initial public offering (IPO)
on three of nine Indian stock exchanges to follow in 1993. In 1993 it received ISO 9001/TickIT
Certification, and in 1995 it established development centers across India.
By mid-1995 the firm had 900 employees and was worth $120 million, with about $20 million in
annual revenue. In addition to its 400,000-square-foot facilities in Bangalore, the firm had
offices in Boston, New York, and Maastricht in the Netherlands. In 1996 it established its
European headquarters in the United Kingdom. Its main facility featured more than 1,000
networked workstations for use in creating software. The company had written the reservation
system for Holiday Inns in the United States. Other customers included Reebok International,
Nestlé S.A., and AT & T.
Infosys established headquarters in what has been called 'India's Silicon Valley' because of its
concentration of more than 100 foreign and domestic companies. The firm's main software
development centers were in the southern Indian city of Bangalore in an area called Electronics
City. Other high-tech companies with facilities there included Siemens and Hewlett-Packard.
Such companies were attracted by the fact that none of the firms' workforces had to be
unionized, software exports were not taxed in India, benefits were a relatively minor cost, and
the profit potential was enormous. These cost-savings were first recognized by American
multinationals in the 1980s.
India was able to provide these firms with highly trained computer programmers and software
engineers. About 15,000 computer science majors graduated from universities in India every
year. The Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore was equipped with the most advanced
technology, and the government supported the university system by providing millions of
dollars for training.

Exponential Growth: Late 1990s

For fiscal 1998 ending March 31, Infosys Technologies reported net revenue of $68.33 million, a
73 percent increase over fiscal 1997. The company's growth was fueled by its offshore software
development model and the branding of some of its services. Infosys Technologies offered its
clients an offshore model, whereby the company would replicate the systems and infrastructure
of its international clients in India. During fiscal 1998 the firm's market capitalization rose to
about $770 million from $192 million at the end of 1997. The company had a total of 12
marketing offices, eight in the United States and four in other countries. During the year, the
company gained 40 new clients. More than 70 percent of the company's revenue came from
repeat business. Initiatives launched during the year included offerings for engineering
services, Internet and intranet solutions, and Enterprise Package Solutions. The company was
also addressing Euro conversion issues. Technical staff increased during the year to 2,186 from
1,396 at the end of fiscal 1997. Total employees increased to 2,622 from 1,701.
The company expanded the decentralized development of software by commissioning the
Infosys Towers facility at J.P. Nagar, Bangalore, during fiscal 1998. The development centers at
4Pune, Bhubaneswar, and Chennai were also expanded. The company also began construction
on Infosys Park at Electronics City, Bangalore, to be completed by December 1999.
It was during fiscal 1998 that Infosys Technologies become one of some 20 companies in the
world to reach Level 4 of the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) of the Software Engineering
Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University. The certification covered fixed-price software
development, maintenance, and re-engineering processes, which together contributed about 90
percent of the company's revenue. Obtaining the certification reflected the firm's commitment
to meeting international quality standards.
Four marketing offices were opened during fiscal 1998, including two in the United States and
one each in Canada and Japan.

Promoters and their families hold 16%.However Govt of India's LIC, which owns 3.78% is the

of health care, social rehabilitation and rural uplift, education, arts and culture. Since then, this
foundation has spread to the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra,
Kerala, Orissa and Punjab. The Infosys Foundation is headed by Mrs. Sudha Murthy, wife of
Founder Cum Chief Mentor Narayana Murthy.
Since 2004, Infosys has embarked on a series of initiatives to consolidate and formalize its
academic relationships worldwide under the umbrella of a program called AcE - Academic
Entente.Infosys' Global Internship Program, known as InStep, is one of the key components of
the Academic Entente initiative. It offers live projects to interns from the universities around the
world. InStep recruits undergraduate, graduate and PhD students from business, technology,
and liberal arts universities to take part in an 8 to 24 week internship at one of Infosys' global
offices. InStep interns are also provided career opportunities with Infosys.
In 1997, Infosys started the "Catch them Young Programme", to expose the urban youth to the
world of Information Technology by conducting a summer vacation programme. The
programme is aimed at developing an interest and understanding of computer science
and information technology. This programme is targeted at students in Grade IX level.

In 2002, the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania and Infosys started the
Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Award. This technology award recognizes enterprises
and individuals who have transformed their businesses and the society leveraging information
technology. Past winners include Samsung, Amazon.com, Capital One, RBS and ING Direct.
Infosys has the largest corporate education center in the world in Mysore. It can accommodate
14000 candidates at one time.
In 2009, Infosys created Infosys Prize for excellence in Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences,
Engineering and Computer Science, Life Sciences and Social Sciences.

Intranet
Infosys's intranet, called "Sparsh" after the Sanskrit word meaning "touch," supports over
114,822 employees across 26 countries in which Infosys operates. Sparsh has today become the
company's primary channel for news and official information, created a communication
platform and opened up networking avenues for its employees.
In 2007, Sparsh was selected as one of "The Year's 10 Best Intranets" by the
Nielsen Norman Group, a user experience research firm that advises companies on human-
centered product and service design.Infosys is the first Indian company to be selected for the
group's Intranet Design Annual Award.

Research
Infosys developed a corporate R&D wing called Software Engineering and Technology Labs
(SETLabs). SETLabs was founded in 2000 to carry out applied research for the development of
processes, frameworks and methodologies to effectively capture customer requirements and to
iron out common critical issues during a project life cycle. [22] Various broad groups are Software
Engg Lab, Convergence Lab, Innovation Lab, Center for KDIS, Security and Privacy Lab and
Distributed Computing Lab.

Charity
In 2005, Infosys donated 10m rupees (about $226,000) to help with the effects of the
2005 Kashmir earthquake in Pakistan. Infosys does not currently have an office in Pakistan.
Controversy
On Thursday, August 5th, 2010 New York Senator Charles Schumer (D) likened Infosys to a
“chop shop” while discussing a $600 million border security bill on the Senate floor. [24]The
remark has been criticized by the United States-India Business Council. Ron Somers, head of
the USIBC, said that the remark was "outrageous in this day in age, when the world is so
interconnected by the Internet, that draconian measures would be floated by the U.S. Congress
that tar-brushes Indian companies as ‘chop shops‘

Infosys Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: INFY) was started in 1981 by seven people with US$ 250.
Today, we are a global leader in the "next generation" of IT and consulting with revenues of

sense, with the least amount of acceptable risk.
Infosys has a global footprint with 63 offices and development centers in India, China,
Australia, the Czech Republic, Poland, the UK, Canada and Japan. Infosys and its subsidiaries
have 114,822 employees as on June 30, 2010.

4.8 billion company with a market capitalization of approximately US$ 33 billion.
In our journey of over 29 years, we have catalyzed some of the major changes that have led to
India's emergence as the global destination for software services talent. We pioneered the
Global Delivery Model and became the first IT company from India to be listed on NASDAQ.
Our employee stock options program created some of India's first salaried millionaires.

Quality at Infosys
On the first day of my stay my hosts arranged for a visit to Infosys, one of India's biggest IT
companies. There we attended a presentation by the company's quality team. The presentation
amazed me. For the first time I heard a company follow the best software engineering practices
I've been reading about over the last 20 years in a sensible manner. IT companies and
professionals often make a travesty of various certifications, by following the letter of a
certification and ignoring the spirit. Infosys is CMMI-5 certified, but, surprisingly for a formal
process-oriented certification, their CMMI level appears to be an outcome of what they actually
practice, rather than the result of jumping some prescribed hoops.
The second thing that amazed me was the company's dynamism. Over the last 8 years, Infosys
7doubles its revenues every two years, reaching $2 billion in 2006. I was told that the company
currently trains 4,500 new recruits every 14 weeks, at its own training campus in Mysore. The
average age of the company's employees is 25 years.
The company's campus at Bangalore was also magnificent; its facilities, buildings, and
landscaped grounds could easily be mistaken for the campus of a top US university. Among
the 50 buildings were a glass pyramid-shaped multimedia facility housing a private television
studio, a large dome-shaped library, auditoriums and lecture halls for continuing education
classes, refectories, sports centers, and a bookshop. One moves around mostly by foot, bicycle.
We used some futuristic electric cars, but these are probably used only for visitors.

The Quality Summit

NASSCOM is India's National Association of Software and Service Companies. I've yet to see
a body representing the IT sector in another country work with their effectiveness. I was told
that the particular summit wasn't one of their largest or most important, yet it was impeccably
organized, and some of the presentations wouldn't be out of place at ICSE, the top research-
oriented software engineering conference. The organizers managed to have at the summit Paul
Nielsen, the director and CEO of Carnegie Mellon's Software Engineering Institute, the
current editor of IEEE Software, as well as the former legendary editor, Al Davis, author of
the classic 201 Principles of Software Development. All session chairs and participants
received a detailed session brief with presentation instructions. Most talks concluded with
interesting and lively discussions with the audience; in one case the discussion at the end of the
day lasted for more than an hour. Obviously the attendants cared passionately about IT and
software quality, and this passion rather than lower costs is I think the driver behind India's
phenomenal IT success.

Sustainability
Infosys began its journey in India's business environment in the 1980s, in an era when endless
red tape was imposed on the private sector. In this environment, building a company whose
long-term objectives included operational longevity, high ethical standards and global respect
demanded commitment to a core set of values. For Infosys, these values focus on instilling trust
in our relationships with all stakeholders, including employees, investors, clients, society and the
communities in which Infosys operates.
•At Infosys, we believe that we must develop trust with the communities in which we operate to
achieve longevity as a corporation. Through the Infosys Foundation, which receives a grant
every year from Infosys (the last year's grant was US$ 3 million) we contribute to betterment of
healthcare (hospitals, infrastructure), education (books, scholarships, refurbishment of
infrastructure) and skills
•Infosys emphasizes its commitment to investors through stringent corporate governance.
Infosys was also among the first Indian companies to voluntarily comply with the US Generally
Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and now provides financial results in the GAAP of six
countries
•With employees from over 70 nationalities, Infosys has built an enduring value system based on
openness, honesty, fairness and transparency, which has earned us the confidence and trust of
our clients. We enjoy +95% customer retention
•Infosys has built one of the largest corporate education centers in the world. This 'finishing
center', with an annual capacity of 15,000, provides engineering graduates who aspire to be
employees with the equivalent of a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from an
American university
