Create a Statement
We are providing you an envelope with
a variety of words or partial sentences
with your neighbor please create 2 or 3
facts or statements about probiotics
and state if you think they are true or
false.
Learning
Objectives
1. Identify two (2) functions/benefits of
probiotics
2. Identify three (3) natural sources of
probiotics
3. Differentiate between probiotics and
prebiotics.
Probiotic Facts

Use of probiotics quadrupled

between 2007 and 2012.
Probiotics are the third most
commonly used dietary

and minerals.
Gut Health
Why is gut health important?
Microbiota - Early stages

Begins to develop at birth

At 2.5 years the microbiome
resembles that of an adult.
Disruption of the microbiota in
early infancy may be a critical
determinant of disease expression
in later life.
What can Damage our Gut in
Adulthood?
Alcohol
Antibiotics
Lack of fiber in diet
Stress
Why is this important?

Obesity Epidemic

Cancer

Could be a way to diagnose TB

faster

Probiotics

Literal meaning = for life

have health benefits.
Same as or very similar to the
microorganisms in our body.
What Microorganisms?
Probiotics contain a variety of
microorganisms.
Among the most common are
bacteria that belong to:
Lactobacillus
Bifidobacterium.
Each of these two broad groups
includes many types of bacteria.
Also includes yeasts such as
Saccharomyces boulardii.

acute illness

Probiotics support a healthy immune
system:
Probiotics secrete antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral
chemical agents
Form a physical barrier to prevent bacterial and yeast
invasion

and other mineral absorption.
Where can I find...

Prebiotics
Prebiotics act as food for probiotics
