(Functional town classification)
Harris & Ullman (1945) 3 tipe umum fungsi kota :
1. Central places, berfungsi terutama sebagai service centers bagi
hinterland
2. Transportation cities break-of-bulk
3. Specialized-function cities
di dominasi oleh satu aktivitas :
mining, manufacturing, recreation

In reality more cities perform a combination of all three major function,

although the relative importance of each one usually varies
significantly from city to city

Functional specialization usually economic

economic base of a city is dominated by one or more major
economic activities

indicator : composition of labor force

difficulties/problem : define the critical level of employment
Central Places Theory
Cities are market centers concerned with either the collection of goods from,
or the distribution of goods and services to the people living the surrounding
areas and beyond

Central Places
Walter Christaller (Germany)
As a complement to the earliest location theory
(Johann Von Thunen)
Agricultural land use around market centers
Assumption:
1. Flat area, homogeneous plain in which there were no barriers to movement,
this permitting uninhibited travel in all direction
2. A dispersed rural farm population regularly spaced over this uniform
territory and an ideal spacing of settlements
3. Human behavior:
.Consumer will always purchase, from the closest central place that offer a
particular good
.Whenever threshold purchasing power for a good will offer the good;
whenever demand for a good drops below threshold, the good will be we
longer offered
Central Places Theory
actors are economically rational in their behavior and

Entrepreneur - have knowledge of the business environment

Centrality
Threshold
Minimum amount of monetary support (in the form of sales)

investments
Level of Communities
Hamlet
Village
Town
City
Regional capital
Central functions and Threshold Sizes
CENTRAL PLACE THEORY
Christallers dispersion model of central places and
