Higher education in Dubrovnik
• Education was valued by the old Republica Ragusii (1358 –
1816) as foundation of the prosperity

• Thus, a grammar school was instituted in 1333, and literacy


was a requirment for participating in the Republic’s
Councils

• In 1555, Beccadelli, Bishop of Ragusa, began plans for a


Jesuit college

• Jesuite founded in 1624 Collegium Ragusinum. It was


accepted by Senate of the Republica Ragusii in 1654

• 1793 the Senate gave permit young noblemen to study


navigation and trade
… and in more recent times

• 1852 nautical school

• 1920s first institute for tourism in Croatia

• 1958higher maritime school

• Faculty for tourism and trade (University of Split)

• 1984Maritime faculty (University of Split)

• 1996 the Polytechnic of Dubrovnik

• 2004 the University of Dubrovnik

Croatian Universities and leading Institutes

• New Doctoral studies will be founded in cooperation with The


Universities of Zagreb, Split , Rijeka and Osijek

• Hope in the future University of Dubrovnik will be recognized as a


distinguished place of studies in certain fields.
Financial support

• To ensure essential conditions for the realization of the study


programs short and long term financial plans has been
designed

• It is expected that main part will come from State Budget, but
gradually University income itself will increase

• Today The University takes part with approximately 20% of its


total income
