PERFORMANCE
TASKS
W H AT A R E P E R F O R M A N C E TA S K S ?
Activities that measure students' mastery of realworld concepts and practices.
They are not merely fun activities created to liven
up students' learning.
While they may be enjoyable for students, the real
purpose of performance tasks is to measure
student learning of particular concepts and
processes.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
P E R F O R M A N C E TA S K S
Students have some choice in selecting the task.
The task requires students to expand upon core
knowledge content and use specific processes.
The task has an explicit scoring system.
The task has value outside the classroom; that is, it
can be applied to a real-world situation.
The task is carefully crated to measure what it
purports to measure.

TA S K S
Burke's (1999) model designates the following steps
in creating a performance task:
Choose learning standards
Write a task description
Plan for direct, whole class interaction
Create options for group work
Include individual work
Designate assessment methods
CHECKLISTS
W H AT A R E C H E C K L I S T S ?
Checklists provide a measureable list of categories
and indicators for projects, products, or
performances.
Checklists allow students to judge their
performances, projects or products to make sure
they have achieved the highest possible rating in
each category.
Every checklists includes these components:
Rating scale
Criteria that reflect standards
Multiple indicators that reflect level of
performance
Grading scale
RUBRICS
W H AT A R E R U B R I C S ?
Rubrics are tools for assessing student products,
projects, or performances.
Rubrics measure students' mastery of content and
thinking skills.
Rubrics help students know what they need to do
as well as understand the qualities their work must
display.
Rubrics allow teachers to assess and track
numerical data in an expanded way.
