GROWTH RATE

AND FATTENING
POTETIAL OF
MEAT ANIMALS

Some important cattle beef

breeds of Pakistan are,
RED SINDHI
Originated from Lasbela district Balochistan
Found in Karachi Hyderabad and Malair in
Sindh
Growth rate of calves born at livestock
experimental station were 0.28 kg per day for
males and 0.22kg for females. Weight at
maturity is reported 318-454.
The breed is too precious to slaughter only male
calves, old bullocks and dry cows are
slaughtered.

RED SINDHI

Sahiwal

Sahiwal district of Punjab

Weight at maturity 385 kg for females
and 544kg for males.
The average daily weight gain reported
at research station is 0.48 kg on conc.
Ration and 0.37kg on fodder.
It is primarily milk breed however its
body conformation indicate its use as
beef.

Sahiwal

Bhagnari
A research project was started at Sibi to
explore the possibility of economic beef
production by crossing Bhagnari cattle
with Australian Draught Master. The
breed obtained from this cross is called
Nari master. The Nari Master showed
increased dressing % age. Research is
going on. The cross of bhagnari with
Santa Gertudis, bran Gus and Simmental
holds considerable potential.

Bhagnari

Dhanni

Originated from jehlum, attock

Weight at maturity is 404 kg for
males and 365 for females.
Basically draught purpose breed
Low milk producer
But the body conformation is such
that it can be developed for meat

Dhanni

Thari

Tharparkar in district of Hyderabad

Breed for milk and draught purpose
The specially of this breed is to grow and
produce milk under very poor feeding . The
body is too strong work heavily in difficult
draught conditions.
The growth rate is 0.454 kg per day .
This animal is exported to several
countries.
Holds potential for beef production as well.

Thari

Rojhan

Habitat is suleman range of DG

khan.
Red and white coat
Draught purpose breed with low
milk yield

Rojhan

Cholistani

Found in desert area cholistan

Bahawalpur Bahawalnagar and
Rahim yar khan.
Ancestor of Sahiwal
Brown body color with white spots
Dairy purpose but calves are raised
as good quality beef.

Cholistani

Dajal

Dajal areas of DG khan

Have similar characteristics like
bhagnari
Have massive and compact body
Draught purpose as bhagnari.

Dajal

A research study was conducted at LPRI

Bahadurnagar Okara under the supervision of
Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha to find out the
potential, growth rate, economic production
and carcass composition of different breeds
of buffalo and cattle. In this study sahiwal,
crossbred, nondescript, buffalo, cholistani
and dajal were studied and given group
numbers I to VI. Ten calves in each group
were fattened with control ration for 90 days.

Buffaloes as beef

The cow meat is preferred in the

country. However the buffalo can be
useful for production of beef and to
fill the gap.
Pakistani buffalo breeds are,

Nili Ravi

The average weight gain range

from0.612-1.066 kg per day.
If this buffalo is fed for beef purpose
on economical balanced rations the
weight gain ranges from0.907-1.134
kg per day.
In this way animal weighing 362-450
kg can be produced in 12 to 15
months.

Nili Ravi

Kundi

The average weight gain in kundi

breed is 0.44 kg per day.
It can be improved up to 0.86 kg per
day by providing good management
and nutrition to the animal.
