OVERVIEW OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE YEAR 4 KSSR

SYLLABUS
Beginning of 2014, KSSR Year 4 English Language will use
the DSKP (Dokumen Standard Kurikulum Prestasi) as a new
way of assessing the pupils.
The time allocation for English Language subject is 150
minutes for SJKC schools and 300 minutes (10 periods) for
SK schools.
DSKP (Dokumen Standard Kurikulum Prestasi) is a
combination of Dokumen Standard Kurikulum and
Dokumen Standard Prestasi. It is derived from the current
documents outlined for current KSSR level1.
DSKP is only for Year 4 2014. Level 1 maintains the current
PBS system.
SKILLS ACQUIRED FOR THE NEW SYLLABUS

As for English Language subject is concerned, there are 6
skills will be assessed for the pupils. Hence, 5 modules are
prepared for the year 4 pupils.
The modules are:
Module One : Listening and Speaking
Module Two : Reading
Module Three : Writing
Module Four : Language Arts
Module Five : Grammar
Grammar items are only developed in Year 4 as this will
reduce the load and stress of learning in the early years
where the emphasis is on learning through fun and play.

The following diagram shows the conceptual framework of the

curriculum model.
LANGUAGE INPUT
In order to make learning more meaningful and purposeful,

language input is presented under themes and topics which
are appropriate for pupils.
Three broad themes have been identified in the curriculum :
1. World of Self, Family and Friends
2. World of Stories and
3. World of Knowledge.
LISTENING AND SPEAKING SKILLS
As core skills of early literacy.
Pupils should be taught:

1. how to listen carefully;
2. to speak from the basic level of sound, word, phrase and
structural sentences in various situational contexts;
3. the stress, rhythm and intonation patterns and how to use
them correctly;
4. to recognise, understand and use not only verbal but also
non-verbal communication; and
5. oral communication practice by means of repeating,
responding, understanding and applying structures of
language in order to prepare them for communication.
LISTENING AND SPEAKING SKILLS CONTENT STANDARDS

By the end of primary schooling, pupils should be able to:

READING SKILLS
The teaching of reading skills :

focuses on basic literacy with the use of phonics in Years 1
and 2;
begins at the word and phrase levels before progressing to
sentence recognition and reading at the paragraph level;
teaches pupils to extract specific information from a text and
to respond to a text with their own ideas and opinions; and
enables pupils to become independent readers who are able
to comprehend a text effectively and efficiently.

write clearly and legibly including cursive writing.
use appropriate vocabulary and correct grammar to get their
meaning across clearly.
write for different purposes and for different audiences.

2. Provide pupils with an early beginning and foundation

literature.
Develop pupils understanding of other societies,
cultures, values and traditions that will help pupils in
their emotional and spiritual growth.

Expose pupils to the aesthetic use of the English

language.

Teachers are free to choose whichever genre to start
teaching in Year 4 as long as all genres are covered in a
year.
Teachers need to plan the allocation of time (weeks) to
cover each text according to the needs and level of their
pupils.

GRAMMAR SKILLS
For pupils to develop all four skills (reading, writing,

listening and speaking) the teaching and learning of
grammar and vocabulary is necessary.
Lesson plans should include tasks which use
grammar to achieve a goal. Provide a context for the
grammar item that is taught.

EVIDENCE AND LESSON PLAN WRITING

Levels of performance can be justified through exercises,
worksheets, class presentations, activity books, quizzes
and etc.
No special file will be required to keep the evidences.
Evidences can be in forms of written and oral.
Lesson Plan Writing:
PUPILS ASSESSMENT
Assessment is recorded for Listening and Speaking,
Writing, Reading and Language Arts in EXCEL template.
The assessment will be recorded throughout the lessons
and will be updated once every 3 months.
The final result will be printed and given to parents at the
end of every 3-month assessment.
