The document discusses pressure relief valves, their purpose of protecting systems from overpressure, and their basic spring-loaded design.

A pressure relief valve is a safety device designed to protect a pressurized vessel or system during an overpressure event.

The relief valve usually has a spring holding its valve seated against the system pressure and spring compression can be adjusted to lift when an unsafe pressure is approached, providing a bypass path back to the pump suction reservoir.

INTRODUCTION
A pressure relief valve is a safety device designed to
protect a pressurized vessel or system during an
overpressure event.

Symbol of pressure relief valve

The

pumps can produce very high pressure using motor

driven piston which may be high enough to burst system

pipes and vessels.
To

prevent system damage relief valve is used. Relief valve

are often provided in hydraulic systems that use positive

displacement pumps.

WORKING

The relief valve usually has a spring holding its valve seated
against the system pressure and spring compression can be
adjusted (for example on a test stand) to lift when an unsafe
pressure is approached.

The relief valve will provide a bypass path back to the pump
suction reservoir that can handle enough of the pump capacity
to avoid damaging high pressure.

Spring Loaded Design

The basic spring loaded pressure relief valve has been developed to meet
the need for a simple, reliable, system actuated device to provide
overpressure protection.

The valve consists of a valve inlet or nozzle mounted on the pressurized

system, a disc held against the nozzle to prevent flow under normal system
operating conditions, a spring to hold the disclosed, and a body/bonnet to
contain the operating elements.

The spring load is adjustable to vary the pressure at which the valve will
open.

setup

There is no return line from the relief valve to the tank.

It measures only the inlet pressure , outlet pressure cannot be
measured because there is no arrangement to measure the
outlet pressure of relief valve.
Hence it cannot be used for academic purpose to carry out
testing of pressure relief valve.

MODIFIED SETUP OF TESTING OF

PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE

WORKING

In the modified setup connection is provided from the outlet of

relief valve to the tank.
Hence overall the relief valve has 3 ports one from inlet,
second to the tank and third to the system.
In this system the inlet and the outlet pressures can be
measured because additional pressure gauge is added after the
relief valve.
Maximum pressure sustained by the system can be calculated
by the modified setup.
Hence the setup can be used for academic purpose to carryout
the testing of pressure relief valve.
