SETTINGS
The epic is based in the southern mesopotamian
city of Uruk, but also includes a number of other
locations. Uruk was founded possibly as early as
5000 BCE and was at it's height in the early third
millennium when Gilgamesh was supposed to
have reigned there. It was located south of
Babylon and north of Ur on the Euphrates river,
in what is now Iraq. It was, possibly, the largest
city in the world at that time, with between 50 to
80000 inhabitants. It was a major trading centre
with impressive walls, temples and architecture
and at times controlled all of Sumer. Some
scholars believe that the name Iraq was
originally derived from the word Uruk.
