    History

    Oxycodone first came to the U.S. in the


    year of 1939. However in 1996, Purdue
    Pharma began manufacturing Oxycontin
    in the United States as it gradually became
    widely used. In 2001 it was the best selling
    narcotic pain reliever in the country
    despite its ups and downs in the market of
    prescription drugs. Since the drug was so
    widely available, individuals with extra
    pills from a prescription were able to
    make a profit by selling it illegally. This is
    the marking point of prescription drug
    abuse as individuals started to misuse
    Oxycontin as a means to get high.

    Oxycontin first developed in Germany in


    the year of 1916. It was designed to be a
    better medication than other opioids,
    such as heroin, codeine, and even
    morphine.
    During this time period, numerous
    individuals were either highly addicted to
    heroin or experiencing serious side effects
    from abuses. The FDA (Food and Drug
    Administration) approved oxycodone in
    1976.

    What is OxyContin?
    A prescription drug used as a painkiller for
    moderate to severe pain
    Exposes patients and other users to the risks of
    opioid addiction, abuse and misuse, which can
    lead to overdose and death.

    Stats

    From 2003 to 2008, prescriptions for the drug tripled


    there and the number of related deaths increased
    every year.

    The Canadian Medical Association published a


    study in 2009. Deaths increased five times
    after OxyContin, the most popular version of
    the painkiller, when it was introduced to the
    public drug plan in the province of Ontario.

    In 2010, for the first time, Canada edged past the


    United States to become the highest opioid-consuming
    country, per capita, in the world
    In 2011, a Canadian Health Policy Institute Report,
    estimated that $504 million is the annual cost from
    OxyContin abuse. Of that amount, $318 million
    represents Ontarios costs alone.

    Despite the drugs seriousness, it is one the


    most abused prescription drugs available today.

    2005, a total of 2.1 million reported

    cigarette smokers (2.3 million).

    Michaels Hospital, Dr. Irfan Dhalla studied
    OxyContin. He states that prescription opioids
    cause up to 1,000 deaths in Ontario yearly.

    Teenagers and Young Adults

    Eighty-eight percent of subjects who


    reported OxyContin use also reported
    that the drug had not been prescribed to
    them for any medical reason, 86%
    reported use of the drug to "get high or
