ABOUT AZIM PREMJI


Azim Hashim Premji was born on 24th July 1945 in
Mumbai
His father MH Hashim Premji owned the Western India
Products Ltd, which made hydrogenated vegetable oils
and fats.
Pursued a Bachelors of Science in Electrical
Engineering from Stanford University
In 1966 on the news of his father's death, the then 21
year old Premji returned home from Stanford University
to take charge of the family business.

Azim Premji later diversified the company to light
bulbs, bakery fats, ethnic ingredient based
toiletries, hair care soaps, baby toiletries, lighting
products, and hydraulic cylinders.
In the 1980s, he recognized the importance of the
emerging IT field, changed the company name to
WIPRO and entered the high-technology sector.
Started manufacturing minicomputers under
technological collaboration with an American
company Sentinel Computer Corporation.
Thereafter Premji made a focused shift from soaps
to software.

Today Azim Premji is the chairman of Wipro Limited,


guiding the company to emerge as one of the Indian
leaders in the software industry.
The companys IT division became the world's first to win
SEI CMM level 5 and PCMM Level 5 (People Capability
Maturity Model) certification, the latest in quality
standards.
Since his immigration into his father's business he has
transformed a US $2million company into a global
technology group with $2.5 billion in sales. Premji owns 79
percent of Wipro.
According to Forbes, he is currently the fourth wealthiest
Indian, and the 91st richest in the world, with a personal
wealth of $17.2 billion in 2013.

Premji has been recognized by Businessweek as
one of the Greatest Entrepreneurs for being
responsible for Wipro emerging as one of the
worlds fastest growing companies.
He has the following characteristics as an
entrepreneur
- Innovative: Azim Premji in during the 1980s
capitalized the opportunity in the market and
diversified his business to Information Technology
sector. He took advantage of the expulsion of IBM
(the then global IT giant) from India.

- Flexibility: With the passage of time Azim Premji
has kept changing his business strategy. He during
the early years of joining the company diversified it
to bakery fats, ethnic ingredient based toiletries,
hair care soaps, baby toiletries, lighting products,
and hydraulic cylinders. He has got the ability to
adapt.
- Strategic Insight: Azim Premji always had the
intuition about the future trend of business. He
during his past four decades of leadership has
successfully run the company owing to his strategic
insight into how things would move in future.

- Bearer of risk and uncertainty: When he diversified to the
IT sector there was an inherent risk associated with it, but he
was not ready to let the opportunity go away. Therefore he
took the risk of such unrelated diversification and succeeded.
- Ethical: Azim Premji has always maintained an ethical
approach to business. He has never being found associated
to unethical business practices.
- Organization Building: With his leadership skills Azim
Premji has build a team, generate resources and solve
problems. He has efficiently performed the planning,
coordinating and controlling functions being the Chairman of
WIPRO.

AZIM PREMJI: A PHILANTHROPIST


In 2001, he founded Azim Premji Foundation, a
non-profit organization, with a vision to significantly
contribute to achieving quality universal education
In December 2010, he pledged to donate $2 billion
for improving school education in India.
Azim Premji has become the first Indian to sign up
for the Giving Pledge. In April 2013 he said that he
has already given more than 25 per cent of his
personal wealth to charity.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS


In 2000, he was voted among the 20 most powerful
men in the world by Asiaweek.
He has twice been listed among the 100 most
influential people by TIME Magazine, once in 2004
and more recently in 2011.
In 2005, the Government of India honoured him
with the title of Padma Bhushan for his outstanding
work in trade and commerce.
In 2011, he has been awarded Padma Vibhushan,
the second highest civilian award by the
Government of India.
