Austria was once the center of a
large empire stretching from
France to Russia and from the
Baltic Sea to Turkey, imparting a
varied heritage to Austria's
cuisine.
Indeed modern Austria now
borders Italy, Hungary and
Germany, among others -and
their culinary influences are the
strongest.
Austria's capital city of Vienna.
The German name sterreich
can be translated into English as
the "eastern realm", which is
derived from the Old German
Ostarrichi.
Small Country, Big History
HISTORY.
The Austro-Hungarian Empire played a
decisive role in Central European history.
Soon after the Republic of Austria was created
at the end of World War I it faced the strains
of catastrophic inflation .
In the early 1930s worldwide depression and
unemployment added to these strains and
shattered traditional Austrian society.
Austria became free and independent for the
first time since 1938.
Austria is located in Central
Europe. It is a predominantly
mountainous country .
Eight countries namely Italy,
Switzerland, the Principality of
Liechtenstein, Germany, the
Czech Republic, Slovakia,
Hungary and Slovenia form the
Austrian border.
Vienna is the capital of Austria
that lies on the Danube River
and is partly surrounded by the
hills of the Vienna Woods.
Population (2006 est.): 8,192,880.
Capital and largest city: Vienna 2,041,300.
Other large cities: Graz,; Linz,; Salzburg,; Innsbruck.
Monetary units: Euro (formerly schilling)
Language: German 98% (official nationwide); Slovene,
Croatian, Hungarian.
Religion: Roman Catholic 74%, Protestant 5%, Islam
4%, other 17%

Austrias capital Vienna spreads along both sides of the
'Blue' Danube at the very foothills of the Alps.
These buildings range from the charming Opera House to
the monumental Natural History Museum.
The pulse of the city can be found along Ringstrasse.
Probably the most famous grave is Mozarts hidden
somewhere in the St. Marx Cemetery when he died
the great composer was buried in an unmarked paupers
grave that to this day remains undiscovered.
In 1965 the 20th Century Fox released a
musical film written by Richard Rodgers
and Oscar Hammerstein, directed by Robert
Wise which ought to become a promotional
tourism film for Austria, The Sound Of
Music. It was original shot in the Austrian
Alps of Salzburg .
The musical is the true story of the Austrian
family "von Trapp", who became famous as
a singing family, touring through the States
in the 1940s.

Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart(1756-1791)
From the very early age of 4 years,
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart received
musical education from his father.
At the age of 5 he was presented as
an infant prodigious and performed
his first musical tour, through
Europe.
On January 27th, 2006, the world marked the 250th
anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birth.

Beethoven(1770-1827)
Ludwig van Beethoven
received his musical education
by his father Johann, who was
a singer and instrumentalist in
the service of the Elector of
Cologne at Bonn.
Adolf Hitler
Adolf Hitler was born on April
20, 1889, at Braunau am Inn,
Austria, a small town 90 km
(55 miles) west of Linz in the
province of Upper Austria, on
the bank of the River Inn,
which formed the border
between Germany and what
was then Austria-Hungary.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Schwarzenegger was born
as the son of a policeman in Graz.
Because he wanted to get into the
local soccer team, he started to
workout. Already at this time
was his destiny to obtain a
perfect body and muscles.

Salad)
Sauerkraut
Sauerkraut is cabbage that has been
fermented in salt. The shredded cabbage is
mixed with salt and tightly packed into huge
stainless steel or fiberglass-lined vats to
ferment. During fermentation, lactic acid is
created. This is what gives Sauerkraut its
unique flavor and texture. After about six
weeks, fermentation is complete and the
Sauerkraut is ready for packaging.
Liptauer Cheese
Liptauer cheese is a soft sheep's
milk cheese named for the
province in Hungary where it
originated, Liptau or Lipto.
The cheese has very little
flavor, so it is commonly
seasoned with herbs, garlic,
onions and paprika (which
turns it red). Other frequently
used flavorings include
anchovies, capers and mustard.

Sundays, and is normally

Goulash(Gulasch) is an
Austrian national dish.
Austrian goulash is an
Hungarian influenced stew,
highly spiced with paprika.
Goulash can be made with
any meat and is served either
with dumplings,potatoes,
spaetzle, noodles or rice but
most often with bread or rolls.

Wiener Schnitzel
Wiener Schnitzel (from the
German Wiener Schnitzel,

Austrian dishes.

roasted potatoes, french
fries, or potato salad, or
with rice.
Kndel are a kind
of dumpling which
can be made either
sweet or savoury
according to taste.

and is very quick to

AUSTRIA VERY MUCH VIENNA.
Apfelstrudel (Apple
strudel)
Apfelstrudel is a traditional Austrian
pastry, and is the most widely known
kind of strudel.
The prefered traditional way to serve
it still hot, adding sugar to the taste,
though vanilla ice cream or whipped
cream are also very popular.
To bake a juicy Apfelstrudel, Elstar
apples are recommended.
Topfenstrudel
The traditional dough for Topfenstrudel
is a flaky dough almost transparent,
similar to a phyllo dough.
The traditional fillings that are used are
apple, cherry, raisin, and cream cheese or
"Quark" .
Sachertorte
Sachertorte is a chocolate-cake.
It is one of the most famous
Viennese culinary specialties.
The cake consists of two layers
of dense, fluffy chocolate dough
with a thin layer of apricot jam
in the middle and dark
chocolate icing on the top and
sides.

A nutty tart crust,
genoise and raspberry
preserve , with classic
lattice design.
They are little
more than hills,
and the dish
consist of heaped
peaks of foam, a
type of souffl.
Danish Pastry
The Danish pastry is said to
originate from Vienna and in
Denmark is called wienerbrd
(Viennese bread). But that is
probably because it uses a
certain kind of dough
consisting of butter and flour in
the classic cuisine referred to as
"Viennese Dough".
Bosner is a spicy (A native or
inhabitant of
Austria) .Bosner is made
with (Bread made with finely
ground and usually bleached
wheat flour) white bread and
is usually grilled briefly before
serving.
