Poetry in The English Classroom

Appreciation of poetry and literature-
Opens children's minds to a fun activity
Develops sensitivity to listening and is
good for pupils who learn from hearing
Rhythm helps students acquire the
music of language
Poetry is Authentic
How to
choose a
poem
The poem should be:
Not too long
Should include rhythm and rhymes
Relevant to the students environment
and interest
Have words that are appropriate for
the reading level of the students
Authentic
How to
teach
poetry
The reader- response
approach
The teacher leads and guides the
students, rather than dominating the
lesson by providing the right answers
and commentary
Brainstorm and pre- teach vocabulary to
set the atmosphere and prepare the
students
The teacher lets his students express
themselves by responding to the poem
and reciting their understanding of the
passage
The teacher asks questions to stimulate
the students response
Students process the information in
their minds to reach a deeper
comprehension
Students can produce a piece of work-
written or pictorial
Synthesize for high order thinking to
apply ideas
This approach is to be
preferred for two main
reasons:
1. It attracts students to poetry
When a child understands the idea of a
poem and finds it interesting and
meaningful to him, then he can truly
appreciate and enjoy it
2. This method teaches students to
become active readers
Students are able to analyze the poem
from different angles and different
layers
The message makes pupils aware of
rhythm, rhymes, and other aesthetic
components
It stimulates creativity and imagination
By using this approach in the
classroom
Students become better trained and
attracted to reading poetry
It helps to develop their language skills,
such as reading, writing, listening and of
course increases their vocabulary
When teaching
poetry, we use the
following teaching
principles:
The teacher teaches how to read a
poem with both ear and eye
The teacher exposes his students to a
diverse variety of poetry which
develops language and the ability to
study poetry
In the experience of writing a poem,
the student recruits his knowledge and
his feelings to create something new of
his own. That way he is able to integrate
his own writing with his reading
Reading, writing, dramatizing and
illustrating poems should be part of
English lessons
the benefits of
poetry
Poetry is a fun way to learn English
(when using the right method )
It enriches the students language and
vocabulary in a way that no book or
movie does
There are many ways to convey a poem, such
as music, drama, singing and other creative
methods. Children usually love these kinds of
activities and are happy to participate
Bringing poems to class is a wonderful way of
breaking up the class routine; it is refreshing
for both teachers and students
the disadvantages of
poetry
Not all students like poetry
Not all teachers know how to present
poetry
