TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
Transformers are stationary
devices used for stepping up/
down of voltage of alternating
current power.
Stepping up is done to evacuate
the generated power and
stepping down for meeting
consumer requirement.
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
The capacity of the transformer
varies with type of cooling namely
ONAN,ONAF,ODAF.
Regulation of load voltage against
changes in system voltage is
achieved by operation of Tap
changers of Transformers.
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
It is also used for controlling
reactive power flow from the
generators
On load tap changer permits tap
changing without interruption of
power. Off circuit tap changer
operation calls for switching off
power to the transformer.
Classification of transformers
1.Power transformers:
a) 220KV class transformers:
LBSS1: 3 x 220KV/11KV/6.6KV,
80MVA
LBSS2: 3 x220KV/11KV/6.6KV,
80MVA
1 x 220KV/33KV
31.5MVA
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
LBSS3: 3 x 220KV/11KV/11KV,
80MVA
LBSS4: 3 x 220KV/11KV/11KV
80MVA
All the above transformers have on
load tap changers, on the 220KV
winding for step down of voltage.
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
LBSS5: 3Nos. 220KV/11KV, 63MVA
1No. 220KV/11KV, 90MVA
1No. 220KV/11KV/11KV,
50MVA
63MVA transformers are connected to 3x
60 MW Gen. at GSB-1.
90MVA transformers is connected to
67.5MW generator.
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
Power generated at BPTG and GETS
are evacuated through 50MVA
transformer. All these transformers
are used for stepping up of voltage.
b) HVLC transformers: Shops
where 6.6KV power is not available,
11/6.6KV transformers with off
circuit tap changers are provided.
Capacity: 4/6.3/ 10/20MVA.
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
2)Stand transformers:
These transformers are provided for
feeding to individual DC drives of
rolling mills through thyristor control.
These transformers are specially
designed to deliver short time high
current and handle harmonic current.
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
3)Auto transformers:
These are used for starting of high
capacity synchronous motors. These
transformers have short time high
current rating and are used for
reducing the starting current. After
nearing the synchronous speed, these
transformers are by passed.
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
4.Distribution transformers:
These are used for stepping down
the voltage from 11KV to 433V
for catering to LT loads. They
are provided at LCSS with off
circuit tap changers.
Capacity: 630,1000,1600 KVA.
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
5.ESP Transformers:
Electrostatic Precipitators remove
the dust from the exhaust gas,
before venting out to the
atmosphere The transformer
provided for this purpose is fed at
variable AC voltage through
thyristors, up to 415V.
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
The HV AC voltage obtained through
step up transformer is rectified by full
wave bridge and connected to each
field.
Reactors: These are provided to limit
the fault current of the power system
and are used as tuned circuits for
Power Factor and Harmonic filter
banks.
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
6)Potential Transformers :
These are used in measurement of
voltage and in protective circuit of
power system.
7)Current Transformers:
These are used in measurement of
current and in protective circuit of
power system.
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
Redundancy has been provided for
220KV transformers, HVLC and
LCSS transformers ie. one
transformer can meet the entire power
of the Switch-Board.
Paralleling is allowed for off loading
one of the two transformers, when
both are fed from the same source.
TRANSFOREMERS AT VSP
All the transformers are provided with
adequate protective devices for
isolating the power in case of fault.
220 KV Transformers are protected
by Lightening Arresters against surge
voltages.
Mineral oil is used as cooling &
insulating medium.

POWER CABLES AT VSP
POWER CABLES AT VSP
Only in 220 KV system & 11KV
system of construction power,
overhead lines have been used for
transmission of power.
Power at 33,11&6.6KV level are
handled by XLPE (cross linked
polyurethane) insulated aluminum
cables.
POWER CABLES AT VSP
These cables are of 3 core design with
each phase having XLPE insulation
with over all PVC insulation .
XLPE insulation can with stand high
temperature (90 deg C continuous)
comparative to other types of
insulation. Hence for the same cross
section, it can handle higher current.
POWER CABLES AT VSP
World wide it is seen that up to 90%
of the electrical faults are due to earth
fault.
In an earthed system, the earth fault
currents are high and this puts strain
on the electrical equipments on fault.
This high current may trip upstream
breaker, due to overlapping of
protective relay operating zone.
POWER CABLES AT VSP
Hence an unearthed system at 11 &
6.6KV level of power system was
designed. Artificial earth has been
provided through Earthing
transformers to limit the earth fault
current to 1000 amp at LBSS and 600
amp at HVLC. This prevents tripping
of other motors on voltage dips during
earth faults.
POWER CABLES AT VSP
Hence each core of the XLPE cable of
the plant is rated for 6.6KV for 6.6KV
system & 11KV for 11KV system.
In the case of Township &
construction power 11KV earthed
system is adopted .In this case each
core of XLPE cable is rated for
6.6KV for 11KV system.
POWER CABLES AT VSP
Radial feeder arrangement is provided
for plant & ring main system is
provided for Township.
90% of XLPE cables are taken
through Cable tunnels, Balance cables
are taken through cable trenches,
underground & through structures.
The cables are joined through heat
shrinkable kits.
POWER CABLES AT VSP
In order to feed HT power to moving
machines at ore, coal & base mix yard
i.e. stacker & reclaimer, flexible
6.6KV polymer rubber insulated
cables called PCRD cables wound on
reeling drums are used.
Power feeding of 415V loads is done
through PVC insulated & sheathed
aluminum cables.
POWER CABLES AT VSP
Power feeding at hot zones are
carried out by heat resistant
silicon rubber insulated cables.
Steel wire armour provides
mechanical protection for under
ground cables.
