Introduction Origin of Vedas Veda Vyasa The Four Vedas Conclusion

The Sanskrit word veda originates from the root vid(to know)and means knowledge, wisdom, or vision. Vedas are composed in Vedic Sanskrit. They are the earliest Sanskrit literature available in the world. The Vedic teachings cover all aspects of human life. They are the highest religious authority for the mankind in general and for the Hindus in particular.

There are several hypotheses about the origin, period and authorship of the Vedas. It is believed that the Vedas are created by God and are not of human origin .HE created Vedas before creation of everything else for the welfare of all future creations and passed it on to Rishis. Several generations of Rishis perceived Veda in the form of chanted mantras and it was transmitted from generation to generation by word of mouth. Since their origin is from sound they are known as Sruthis also.

In the earlier eras the Vedas were a single Massive entity. Hence it wasdifficult to to study them.Sage Krishna Dwaipayana Dedicated himself to the task of editing, compiling and finally dividing the vedic Material into four Vedas viz.Rig,Sama, Yajur and Atharva .Veda Vyasa means one who devided the Vedas.Krishna Dwaipayana alias Veda Vyasa was a contemporary of Lord Krishna in Dwapara Yuga which ended nearly 5200 yearsyears ago.He has written many granthas including the MahaBharatha.

RIGVEDA is a collection of inspired songs or hymns and is known as the book of mantras.
It is the oldest of books in the world ,covering about 10,600 hymns which are the works of many rishis / seers. The prominent among them are Kanva , Atri, Vasishta, Vishwamitra, Gauthama, Jamadagni and Bharadwaja .Rig veda accounts in detail the social, religious, political and economic background of Rigvedic civilization.

SAMAVEDA is a book of melodies almost completely drawn from Rigveda. It has

no distinctive lessons of its own

YAJURVEDA meets the demands of a ceremonial religion. It contains prayers in

prose and sacrificial mantras.

ATHARVAVEDA is a house of information on topics such as the latest in

medicine, science, economics, business, warfare, sociology, spirituality and magic (abhichar).

Although the vedas are seldom read or understood today, even by the devout , they no doubt form the bedrock of universal religion or Sanatana Dharma. The vedas have guided direction for ages and will continue to do so for generations to come . And they will forever remain the most comprehensive and universal of all ancient scriptures.
