Starting 15th on the grid of the Northfield Savings Bank Tuesday, July 3rd Fireworks 50 lap Late Model Main Event, Nick Sweet of Barre chased down early leader Scott Payea at the races half way point for second place. Hard charging Dave Pembroke joined in during the last 10 laps as Sweet past Payea for the win and Pembroke eased in taking second from Payea. A late race charge from Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman Jason Allen of Barre earned him the victory over Joel Hodgdon. Allen also started 15th on the grid. John Lambert finished in third. The Allen Lumber Street Stock Main feature winner was Ron Gabaree of Barre followed by William Hennequin in second and Bob Eldred in third.

Vermonts muzzleloader antlerless deer hunting permit applications are now available on the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Departments website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com). A quick-link to the information and application is provided on the home page. Its a really quick and easy process that ensures your entry is immediately entered into the lottery, said Director of Wildlife Mark Scott. Plus, it saves postage. We really encourage you to use the online application. It is more efficient for you and for us. Be sure to apply before the September 5 deadline. The Fish and Wildlife Board met on June 14 and approved the number of December muzzleloader permits at 12,425 for 15 of the states 24 Wildlife Management Units, to allow antlerless hunting during the archery season in all WMUs except WMUE, and to allow any deer to be taken during youth deer hunting weekend.
The proposal represents a conservative approach to antlerless deer hunting this fall, said Scott. Weve been able to reduce deer numbers in parts of the state and meet our management objectives in recent years. The number of muzzleloader season antlerless permits for this year will allow for slow growth in the deer herd in most regions of the state. Biologists expect hunters who receive the permits will take about 2,246 antlerless deer in the muzzleloader season and an estimated additional 3,070 antlerless deer in youth and archery seasons. Winter weather in 2011-2012 was the mildest recorded in recent decades, said Scott. We need to manage the herd carefully to ensure the numbers of deer remains appropriate for the available habitat in each of Vermonts 24 Wildlife Management Units.

Yes, were still here with the same quality service weve offered for over 30 years -Norm Trepanier, Manager
Who is the only former Shrine Football Player to play for a National (Division I) championship team; be named first team All American, appear on the cover of Life Magazine; play six years with the Patriots and return to his native state to coach high school football and yes, coach in the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl? That former player is Bob Yates, a graduate of Montpelier High School and a participant in the 1956 Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. He went on to star at the University of Syracuse and was on the Orangemens National Championship team in 1959. He was drafted out of Syracuse by the original Boston Patriots in 1960 and played for the Pats until 1966. He coached high school football in Massachusetts and at Harvard before returning to Vermont as head coach at Burlington High School in 1979. For Yates, the Shrine Game is a family tradition. He was coach of the 1983 Vermont Shrine team; his two sons Tim and Steve both played in the Shrine Game as did his brother Mike. Today he lives in Spring Branch, Texas with his wife Fay, but in the month of August he can be found on Joes Pond in Vermont; and on August 4 he will be in Hanover for the 59th Annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. As for memories of his Shrine Bowl experience in 1956, Yates says, When you consider that I played
Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl Veteran Looks Forward to the Big Game
57 years ago some of them are fading, but one of my favorite memories was practicing at Ralph Kehoe Camp in southern Vermont and being housed in little cabins with wooden cots. The game I remember was a defensive struggle as neither team was able to muster any kind of an offense. The final score was 0-0. But all in all it was a great experience for a great cause. That cause of course is the Shrine Hospitals for Children which are the recipients of the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl and the hospitals include the Shrine Burns Hospital in Boston and the Shrine orthopedic hospitals in Springfield, MA and Montreal. The 59th Annual Shrine Game will kick-off on August 4 at 2:30 pm on Dartmouth Colleges Memorial Field and as always, the game will be proceeded by a spectacular Shrine Parade through the streets of Hanover at 12 noon. The parade will feature Shrine Units from around the Northeast and an incredible display of miniature vehicles, motorcycle groups and brass bands. And, for the seventh year the parade and halftime show will feature an all star high school band of over 120 talented musicians from high schools throughout NH and VT. The Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl is sponsored by Bektash Shrine Center of Concord, NH and Mt Sinai and Cairo Centers of Montpelier and Rutland, VT.

n In winning Saturday nights Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway, Tony Stewart side-drafted and separated the dominate pair of Roush Fenway teammates Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle, who had surged into the lead during a two-lap run to the finish, then pulled away for his fourth win in the last eight July races at the 2.5-mile superspeedway. As Stewart crossed under the checkered flag for his third win of the season and the 47th of his career, a massive wreck in Turn 4 skewed the finishing order behind him. Stewarts 47th victory broke a tie with Hall of Famer Buck Baker for 14th alltime. All told, Stewart has won 18 races at Daytona, but, much as it did with Dale Earnhardt Sr., the big prize continues to elude him. I dont know, but Ill trade em all in for just one Daytona 500, Stewart said of his four July victories. This is 18 wins at Daytona -- we just havent got the right one yet. But all of em are special, and its cool to do this. Jeff Burton came home second and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series leader Kenseth third (after leading a race-high 89 laps), with Joey Logano and Ryan Newman completing the top five. Biffle, involved in the last-lap crash after he and Kenseth separated, finished 21st despite having led 37 laps. With his third place finish Kenseths lead in the standings grew to 25 points over Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was collected in the last-lap crash and finished 15. Biffle is third, 44 points behind Kenseth. n Hardnosed Barre racer Nick Sweet set-off a fireworks display of his own on his way to a hard fought win in Tuesday nights Northfield Savings Bank Holiday event at Thunder Road. Defending Thunder Road Champion Dave Pembroke chased Sweet to the line, and Miltons Scott Payea was forced to settle for third in the closing laps. Sweets win came the hard way patiently running down his intended victims one car at a time from a fifteenth starting position. Sweet a master at race traffic manipulation reached the runner-up position just past the halfway mark and began chasing Payea who had extended a sizable lead searching for his first win of 2012. Sweet mercilessly closed the gap before catching him with 10 laps to go and charged to victory rim-riding the outside lane. Pembroke inched by Payea on the last lap to steal second, and Chip Grenier
scored his first top five of the season with a fourth place finish. TrampAas Demers, a feature winner already this season, came home fifth. With his win, Sweet breaks a streak of 19 different winners in 19 feature races in 2012 at Thunder Road. Wow, that was a lot of fun to drive, remarked Sweet. We touched a bit there at the end, I think he just wanted our lane, but he drove a great race. A late-race surge from Barres Jason Allen earned him the victory in the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman class. n Kurt Busch won Friday nights Subway Jalapeno 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway in a battered No. 1 Chevrolet that looked like he may have just completed a local tracks Saturday night figure eight race. With a strong push from defending series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Busch took the checkered flag in a wild race that ended with Austin Dillon wrecking in the tri-oval as Busch crossed the finish line. Stenhouse came home second, followed by Michael Annett, who was pushing Dillon during a green-whitecheckered-flag finish that took the race one lap beyond its scheduled distance of 100 laps. As the action intensified over the final quarter-mile, Dillon slid sideways across the stripe in fourth place, with Joey Logano and series leader Elliott Sadler taking fifth and sixth, respectively. The top-five for Logano, the series top winner with five victories this season, took a sour turn in post-race inspection when his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota was ruled too low in front. Penalties for the No. 18 team are possible early next week. Busch picked up his second win of the season and his fifth in 23 Nationwide starts, in a day-glow orange car that differed from the usual bright red he drives for owner James Finch. I showed up at the shop on Tuesday, and we talked about how our Kentucky week went, what we could have done better, Busch said. I went out back in the fab (fabrication) shop, and they were wrapping on both of our cars, this fluorescent orange color. And Im like, Whats going on? Its just the energy James Finch has for Daytona. He wanted his cars orange, so they could be seen up front, so that car could be recognized without a sponsor on it. And we drove an unsponsored car into

Victory Lane tonight. I was just being my normal sarcastic self on the radio, and I said, The Great Pumpkin is here, and the Great Pumpkin isnt going to lift coming to the checkered flag. n NASCAR announced Saturday, an hour and half before the start of the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona that it has temporarily suspended Sprint Cup driver AJ Allmendinger, 30, after he failed a random drug test. NASCAR without taking any questions issued a brief prepared statement, saying that Allmendingers A sample tested positive and pursuant to the rule book, Allmendinger has the opportunity to request within the next 72 hours that his B sample be tested. The test in question was administered by NASCAR the week before during the Sprint Cup Series event at Kentucky Speedway. As cars were being pushed to the starting grid for the Coke Zero 400, Allmendingers Penske Racing team was working feverously in the garage installing a new seat in the No. 22 ShellPennzoil Dodge so Sam Hornish Jr., who the team was flying in from Charlotte, could drive the car. Garage Garble n Richard Petty celebrated his 75th birthday on July 2 his age one year greater than his 74 starts at Daytona International Speedway. Petty, who leads all Daytona winners with 10 three in Julys race, most recently in 1984 made his first start at the track in 1959. His fabled No. 43 car has won 11 times second only to the 14 Daytona victories of Glen Woods No. 21. Both NASCAR Hall of Famers cars competed in the Coke Zero 400 Trevor Bayne for Wood and Aric Almirola for Petty. n For the second time this season and seventh time in his career Timothy Peters returns to the top in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship standings following a top-five run at Kentucky. In eight races, Peters has finished inside the top 10 in seven of them, an 11th place finish at Texas is his lowest finish of the year. Despite still searching for his first win of the season, the North Carolina native is off to the best season of his career. He currently leads Justin Lofton and Ty Dillon by four points each followed by James Buescher and Parker Kligerman. Buescher, who drives for Turner Motorsports, dominated Kentucky leading 119 of 150 laps en route to his second win of the season, becoming the first driver in 2012 to win multiple events. He made up an impressive 14 championship points from the previous race to be fourth in points, only nine points out of the lead. Victory Lane n ACT Tour regular, Randy Potter chased down and passed St Johnsbury Vermonts Stacy Cahoon on lap 63 to take control of the event, and then raced his way through lapped traffic to earn a titanic victory in the inaugural running of the Berlin City Auto Group 100 at White Mountain Motorsports Park in North Woodstock Saturday. n Young stock car driver Hunter Bates used a combination of good equipment and good timing to win the Bond Auto Parts Modified portion of the Coca-Cola Firecracker Twin 44s at Devils Bowl Speedway on Wednesday as rain pulled the plug on the event on Lap 25 just beyond the half way mark. n East Montpeliers Jay Laquerre took the 50-lap late model feature on his way to his second win of the 2012 season on Thursday night at Thunder Road. n Rookie Emily Packard thrilled the Thunder Road crowd Thursday night with her first career victory in the Allen Lumber Street Stocks. Packard was thrilled to be in victory lane. Its been a tough couple of weeks, remarked Packard, who was part of a massive twocar flip just two races ago. Had to change the engine after Tuesday and make it back here for today. I cant believe we got it all done. Stormin Keith Normand is on a tear in the Town and Country Motor Inn Street Stocks at Riverside Speedway, blowing through the field on Saturday night to win his second JA Corey/ US Cellular Triple Crown Series events in as many races, while Luke Shannon picked up his second feature win of the 2012 season in the North Country Late Model division. n Matt Robie of Hill, NH won all there was to win at Bear Ridge Speedway Saturday, scoring his first heat win with the Sprint Cars of New England and then coming back to earn his first SCoNE feature win in the 25 lap main event. Robies victory keeps alive the streak of no repeat winners in SCoNE features this season. The seven features run so far this year have produced seven different winners, including three first timers. Quebec Citys Jean-Francois Dery found redemption with a huge victory at Autodrome St-Eustache in St-Eustache, QC on Saturday night. On his way to the win Dery had to fend off a challenge from race runner-up and former Serie ACT Castrol Champion Sylvain Lacombe, and a late-race charge from defending champion Patrick Laperle in third. What Theyre Saying n On Thursday upcoming Vermont State stock Car Championship SeriesVT State Lottery Commission Governors Cup 150 at Thunder Road. To think that the organizers have put together a series to decide Vermont honors has made it unique and special for us all. Now we just have to win it, Phil Scott. - Making the state crown a series like this really adds some prestige to the whole thing. Its good to be on top, but we know weve still got two more to go, Brent Dragon Next Lap n The 2012 Vermont State Stock Car Championship Series heats up just in time for the crown jewel of the four race series: The VT State Lottery Commission Governors Cup 150 at Thunder Road. Miltons Brent Dragon leads the swarming field to the Nations Site of Excitement on Thursday, July 12 with a slim 6-point lead over multi-time Thunder Road Champion Phil Scott. n Sprint Cup comes to New England for the 20th Annual Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday (TNT, 1:00p.m.). Ryan Newman is the defending race and pole winner. Newman led 119 laps beating out Stewart Haas teammate and Tony Stewart for the top spot.
