LifeIts a Daily Choice

After I posted an invitation to the June 18th Heart Choices Pizza Hut Night on Facebook, a witty friend, relating the nature of the event with our name, asked So is pizza really good for your heart? My answer was YES. Your choice to buy pizza in Beloit on the 18th could keep a heart beating for an unborn child. 6th & Independence, P.O. Every day we make choices. Some have little or no lasting effect, like what article of clothing we choose to wear or what flavor of ice cream to order. Others, however, are more impactful for ourselves and others. For example, the woman who has come to our Center the past few weeks is wrestling with the choice of whether or not to continue her pregnancy. For her, it would mean taking physical and financial responsibility for an infant, disappointing her parents, and feeling publicly ridiculed. For her unborn child, the choice is life or death; Future or no future. Birth or no birth. That impact is HUGE. Together, we are exploring options that will bring positive results for both mother and baby and no regrets. We are walking with her, offering hope and help through what feels to her like a very dark time in her life. It is because of the choice of many to support the Heart Choices ministry through prayer, finances, donated goods, and volunteer hours that our client advocates are available to meet with this mother and other parents facing difficult situations in their lives, as they were in 76 client visits last month. We were so blessed with the financial and volunteer response from the Spring Banquet this year as Kirk Walden challenged us to Build A Culture of Life in North Central Kansas. Together we are committed to do just that as we provide pregnancy and parenting support services and sexual integrity education throughout a nine-county (or sometimes more) area. As the request for services increase, so does the need for support. Will you make the choice to keep a babys heart beating or to help a parent learn effective parenting skills, or to provide essential items such as formula, diapers, and cribs for those who are in need? Will you choose to support sexual integrity education in our schools so that youth can make healthy life choices? Your support in fundraising activities, such as the Pizza Hut night, fireworks stand, Mitchell County Fair lemonade and brat stand, and the Walk-Run 4 Life and Duathalon in September are great choices to help this ministry and can definitely make a difference in the life of a child or parent. May I ask you to go one step further? Will you join our leadership team and so many others by adding a monthly gift to Heart Choices to your giving plans? Whether you choose to give $25 a month, $50, $100, or $15, or $5 . . . every gift is appreciated and helps sustain this ministry to be available for years to come. Its a choice that can mean life or death for a child. Above all, pray for us as we minister as we also are praying Gods blessing on you as you choose life today and every day!

Are We Making A Difference?

Mary Fugate Sexual Integrity Director
Those of us who are sexual integrity volunteers sometimes wonder if we are making a difference when it comes to the youth in the North Central Kansas area. That feeling seems to be driven home when one of us finds that a friend or family member will have to face the consequences of an unhealthy decision related to their sexuality. A couple of us have recently become painfully aware of those consequences with a family member and it really shakes us and makes us question "What's the use?" Fellow volunteers can attempt to energize and inspire us to continue, and they do, but it is always a considerable boost to see that research is consistently showing that abstinence education is successful and the number of students choosing that path is increasing over time. Last fall two reports were released by the Centers for Disease Control showing that teens are embracing abstinence. According to a report on teen sexual activity released in October, the number of girls having sex between the ages of 15 and 19 dropped 8 percent between 1988 and 2010, from 51 percent to 43 percent. The number of boys having sex dropped 18 percent, from 60 percent to 42 percent. The rates of abstinence were highest among 15- to 17-year-olds, with only 27 percent of girls and 28 percent of boys reporting sexual activity. In 1988, 37 percent of girls and 50 percent of boys in the same age range told researchers they already had started having sex. This is great news for parents and for those of us at Heart Choices who meet with the youth face to face. The main argument from the advocates of comprehensive sex-ed has been that teenagers cannot control their hormones, so they need to be taught about safe or safer sex. We are encouraged to see the research disprove that and show that teens can control themselves. When they hear the truth, they can assess it and make wise decisions. That provides the motivation we need to continue sharing truth with students. Abstinence is a life choice that is resonating with teens. They are not ashamed of it. They are embracing it. I hope that is also great news for all of you who are our prayer partners, donors and supporters. Yes, along with you, we are making a difference.

SPRING BANQUET BRINGS IN OVER $43,000!

Over 230 friends and supporters of Heart Choices enjoyed a spring evening in Beloit on April 12 at the Annual Spring Banquet. In addition to the information about the activities for the year given by Alice Thompson, Executive Director, and Mary Fugate, Sexual Integrity Director, guest speaker, Kirk Walden encouraged and inspired those attending with his sometimes humorous but informational message of the help and hope pregnancy centers offer to those in needy situations. Kirk has been a single dad in need of such encouragement, and also a pregnancy center director, so he spoke from experience. The staff, volunteers, and board members of Heart Choices were encouraged by his time spent with them at the Center. He truly had a good knowledge of how Heart Choices is impacting the North Central Kansas area.
Alice Thompson visits with guests Marcy Lantz, Sarah and Aaron Keller, and Allison and Chris Lecuyer prior to the meal.

We are pleased to report that over $43,000 was given or pledged for the coming year to the work of Heart Choices. That is the best response we have ever received, and we are most grateful to you, our friends, for your support.
