    here are 270 kinds of turtles known to man today.

    Turtles have been on earth for about 230 million years. They are found everywhere on earth except the Arctic and Antarctic. All turtles have shells. The outer shell is made of keratin, like your fingernail. Turtles have no outer ear but they do have an inner ear and they can hear, but turtles do not rely on their hearing as means of protecting themselves. A turtles sense of vision and smell is excellent. The hearing center of their brains is small compared with their sight and smell centers. There are no poisonous turtles. Turtles have no teeth or fangs, hence no way to inject poison. However, there have been reports of people who have gotten sick after eating American box turtles. It is believed that these turtles are able to eat mushrooms poisonous to humans with no effects, but the poison from the mushroom ingested by the turtle that the human ingests makes the human ill. A female turtle finds a safe place to dig a nest with her hind legs. Depending on the type of turtle, she will lay from one or two eggs to dozens of eggs at a time. Most mother turtles leave the nest. However, some mothers will guard their nest to keep them safe from egg-eating snakes or other predators. North American wood turtles have been observed guarding in areas where snakes are a problem. Burmese tortoises will stand guard also. But all turtles leave their baby hatchlings unattended.     Galapagos Islands can live more than 200 years. Some American box turtles live to be over 100 years. Some sea turtles have lived to 75 years old. The common red ear slider can live 40 years or more if it receives good proper care. Turtles are endothermic, meaning they get their heat from their surroundings air, water and the ground. They need to be warm to eat and to move around. If they get too cold, they slow down, and cant eat or digest food. Their hearts and lungs slow down as well. Most turtles hibernate or what some people call brumate. Different turtles hibernate in different ways. Most water turtles go to the bottoms of ponds, streams or small bodies of water to sink down in the mud. Then they let themselves get cold. They do not need to eat, and their hearts slow down to about one beat every few minutes. They breathe through special cells in their tails, taking oxygen from the water. Land turtles dig deep down in the ground. They tuck into their shells, which some call boxing up. Because they dig so deep they are able to stay warm enough to survive. Once spring arrives they become active again. This being said, the blanding turtle has been observed swimming under the ice in the Great Lakes region.

    A group of turtles is called a bale. Historically, turtles have been symbols of patience and wisdom. A female turtle will dig several small nests to throw its predators off. Once a male sea turtle enters the ocean he will probably never step on land again. The largest turtle is the Leatherback sea turtle. (Up to 6.5 feet and 2,000 pounds) The largest tortoise is the Galapagos. (Up to 5 feet and 550 pounds.) The largest freshwater turtle in the U.S. is the Alligator Snapping turtle. (Average 26 inches in length and 175 pounds.) Turtles and other reptiles can carry salmonella bacteria. This does not hurt the turtle but can make humans very sick.

    TURTLE FACTS

    Take precautions when handling turtles and all other reptiles: 1. Never put reptiles in your mouth. 2. Always wash your hands with lots of soap after handling turtles (and reptiles). 3. Very young children should never handle reptiles. 4. Dont let reptiles walk, crawl, or slither in your homes. If kept as pets, they should be kept in tanks.

    In North America we call them tortoises if they live on land and need very little access to water. We call them turtles if they need constant access to water. In Europe only sea turtles are called turtles. The freshwater kinds of turtles are called terrapins, and the land types are called tortoises. In Australia all kinds of turtles except sea turtles are called tortoises, but please note that there are no land turtles in Australia, just sea turtles and freshwater turtles. So if all of this has you confused, just call all of them chelonia (kell-OHNee-uh). Thats the scientific order that refers to aea turtles, freshwater turtles, terrapins and tortoises.

    TURTLE COOKIES
    A bag of square waffle pretzels Rolo candies Pecan halves Place waffle squares on a foil-lined cookie sheet sprayed with cooking spray. Place a Rolo candy on top of each pretzel and place in oven on 250 degrees for about 5 minutes. Place a pecan half on top of each Rolo candy immediately after they come out of the oven warm. Carefully press the pecan down squishing the Rolo candy. Let candy cool. Share your turtle cookies with a friend.
