1.0 P-CAD Viewer Features

The P-CAD PCB and Schematic Viewers are design exploration and cross probing tools that give you the ability to gain read-only access to P-CAD designs. When available, this document includes references to the Help file, where you can find more information on these features.

1.1 Opening P-CAD Files

To open a file with the P-CAD PCB Viewer, it must be saved as a PCB binary file (*.pcb) or PCB ASCII file (*.pcb). To open a file with the P-CAD Schematic Viewer, it must be saved as a Schematic binary file (*.sch). You can view all of the design data in a design file. For more information, see the online Help file.

1.2 Exploring a P-CAD Design

With the P-CAD PCB and Schematic Viewers, you have the ability to gain access to the properties of all objects in a design, as well as the properties and design rules associated with the design itself. The following summarizes the menu commands you can use to gain access to this information: Select an object and choose the Edit Properties command to examine the properties and attributes associated with the selected object.

Choose the Options Design Rules command to explore the clearance rules for specific objects, nets, net classes, and PCB design layers. Choose the File Design Info command to review design statistics, explore pre-defined and user-defined field information, and display design-level attributes. Define block selection criteria, modify your display settings, change workspace preferences, switch between PCB layers or Schematic sheets.

For more information, see the online Help file.

1.3 Jumping to Components, Parts, Net Locations and Text

The commands in the View menu give you the ability to jump to components, parts, nets, and text. For instructions, see the online Help file.

1.4 Cross Probing Between P-CAD Designs

With the DDE hotlinks feature, you can cross probe between P-CAD PCB and P-CAD Schematic designs, to examine the relationships between the designs. This feature enables the exchange of hotlink data, which consists of highlighting and unhighlighting commands for parts, components, and nets. For example, highlighting a net in one program highlights the
corresponding net in the other program.

You can cross probe between the following programs at one time, only when the DDE hotlinks
feature is enabled in both programs:

(1) P-CAD Schematic and P-CAD PCB Viewer (2) P-CAD PCB/Relay and P-CAD Schematic Viewer (3) P-CAD PCB Viewer and P-CAD Schematic Viewer.

1.5 Printing P-CAD Files

The P-CAD PCB and Schematic Viewers support the printing of design files. In addition, you can add, delete, and modify the settings for your print jobs. However, any print jobs settings that you add, delete, or modify affect the current viewing session only. For instructions, see the online Help file.

1.6 P-CAD Database Exchange Queries

You can query a P-CAD file through P-CAD Database Exchange (DBX). However, DBX programs cannot modify P-CAD Viewer design data.
