1940 Census Released

For many people researching family history, it can be helpful to start with a relative in the most recent census and work their way backwards to earlier generations. There is a 72 year restriction on access to the census and the National Archives releases this information every ten years. Until April 2, the most recent census available was the 1930 census. On April 2 the 1940 census was released. It is available free of charge through the National Archives website. The census cannot be searched by individual names yet; an index is being developed. The data can be accessed by a geographic location called an enumeration district [ED]. In 1850, the census began recording the name of each person living in the household. The relationship between them is not stated and consequently not always clear. The information requested on each subsequent census is different for each year but might include names, gender, marital status, age at marriage, country or state of birth, occupation, etc. All kinds of interesting tidbits can be discovered within the census record. Access the 1940 census at the librarys website at www.rowanpubliclibrary.org.
