lesson plan
exploring environments
Teacher objective: To consider different environments, think of the world as a shared environment and discuss how poor people may rely more directly on their environment. Child-friendly objective: Today we are learning that we should care for the environment because we share it with others. Curriculum links: Personal social and emotional development. Communication language and literacy. Knowledge and understanding of the world.
1 Starter activity
Photocopy and hand out activity sheet 1. Looking at photos 1, 2 & 3 ask children: What are the villagers doing? Why do you think it is important to them? Looking at photo 3 ask children: What sort of weather might make it hard for villagers to grow food? How might the well in photo 1 help? Finding a focus: Explain that we can learn lots about how easy it is to live in an environment just from looking at photos. Many poor people are more reliant on their environment for their everyday needs because they survive by farming and use the things around them to build their homes, feed their cattle and make a living. Humans are not always careful with the environment. Harm to the environment can make it more difficult for poor people to farm or collect water or find a way of earning money.
Split the class into teams, allowing all to see the poster. Photocopy and hand out a poster per group if necessary. Ask teams to memorise things they can see in photo 1, before hiding all posters. Choose a team to start the game. Play a game of In the village I can see. Pupils complete the phrase with an element they have memorized and explain why or how it might be important in that environment. Move to a new team after every answer, keeping score of each correct answer.Total up the scores and give prizes. Finding a focus: Look at the third and fourth photos. Discuss ways in which the environments are different. Look at all photos. In which pictures are people most reliant on the environment? How are they reliant? What might make their environment a difficult place to live?
Photocopy a set of answer cards from the template sheet for each pupil or pair. Discuss what each of the cards represents i.e enough to eat and not enough to eat, farming and shopping etc. Ask children to hold up the correct cards in order to answer the following questions: Looking again at photo 1, ask children: Where do you think the village might be? What do you think the weather is like?
Photocopy, cut out and jumble up one set of drama cards for each group. Split the class in to groups of three. Allocate one character to each member of each group. Ask pupils to match the pairs and re-order sections before reading out their parts in order and acting them out. Ask pupils to think about what they learn.
Hand out and allow children to complete activity sheet 2. Discuss pupils decisions.

Daughter: Dad: Mum: All together: It was not always like this. Pollution has warmed the world up. Without water our country is dry. Pollution and harmful gases have made our hot country hotter. But we can still make the world a nice place to live. Daughter: Dad: Mum: All together: We can still make the world a nice place to live. We are changing things already. We work with our village. We farm in good ways. We look after our land. We have a well. We use water wisely.
