Organization Profile The Southeastern Wisconsin Watersheds Trust (Sweet Water Trust) is a collaborative effort to achieve healthy and sustainable water resources throughout the Greater Milwaukee Watersheds and nearshore Lake Michigan. The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commissions (SEWRPC) Regional Water Quality Management Plan and Watershed Restoration Plans serves as the foundation and focus of Trusts efforts for cost effective, economically sustainable and life improving activities that improve our regions water resources. The Trust is built upon a full range of partners including government, business, building industry, agriculture, and environmental entities that work in cooperation to leverage funding for water quality and water resource improvements. The organization functions through an Executive Steering Council, committees, and Watershed Action Teams for the Menomonee and Kinnickinnic River Watersheds. It is a non-governmental, non-taxing, voluntary organization. Job Overview The Sweet Water Trust created the new position of Executive Director to primarily provide management, fundraising/event planning, and communication services to enhance our ability to improve our regions water resources. Job Description (Specific duties and responsibilities of the position.) Community Relations/Communications/ Public Relations (20%) Serve as a high-profile presence for the Trust. Establish and strengthen ties throughout the region that will synergize grant funding, create project partnerships and draw public attention to the Trust. Management (50%) Provide strong leadership for actions recommended in future Watershed Actions Plans that create real, measurable, and lasting improvements throughout the Greater Milwaukee Watersheds. Support the operation of and assist the Council in effectively leading and managing the Councils committees, watershed action teams, work groups, and consultants it may retain. Assist in the preparation of Watershed Restoration Plans and implementation of projects identified in the Watershed Restoration Plans. Provide overview and management of the work funded by the Joyce Foundation and other funders to ensure all actions are consistent with the mission, goals and purposes of the Trust and that the funded projects are high quality, on budget, and on schedule. Ensure compliance with all funders reporting requirements. Ensure all compliance with all government reporting requirements.
Fundraising/Event Planning. (30%) Seek and obtain funds to support the mission, goals and purposes of the Trust. Engage in other activities consistent with the Trusts mission, goals, and purposes as directed by the Executive Steering Council. In addition to these primary efforts, the Trust will engage in other special work activities depending on the availability of funds and schedule. Others may do the special work activities in part or totally. Anticipated efforts are: Development of a business plan. Development of a communications plan. Implementing a fundraising plan. Development of a membership recruitment and retention plan. Planning, organizing, and holding an Annual Clean Water Summit. Website development and maintenance. Undertaking additional WRP planning (unless MMSD continues to fund). Undertaking WRP recommended activities (projects, programs, outreach). Monitoring and reporting on progress toward goals. Job Qualifications Education Requirements. A bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in environmental studies, environmental engineering, ecology, public administration, non-profit organization management, or a closely related field. Experience Requirements. Seven (7) years of progressively responsible work experience in environmental studies, environmental engineering, ecology, public administration, or closely related field, with three (3) years of experience in public relations, communication, and work with non-traditional stakeholders. Drivers License required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of environmental science, policies, and practices. Experience working with non-profit organizations, government, and community groups. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Excellent communication skills required with the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to work effectively with committees and the general public. Ability to prioritize, work, and manage time independently. Ability to set program goals and actions to achieve the program goals. Excellent computer skills, familiarity with email and the Internet. Compensation & Benefits The Trust anticipates entering into a one-year contract, with the option to extend for two additional one-year terms. The successful candidate will be an independent contractor and have sole responsibility for their compliance with the contract and will not be an employee of the Trust or its fiscal agent.
