May 15--KOCHI: Despite a strengthening rupee, the k export touched an all timehigh level of Rs 605.17 crore for 2006-07 showing an increase of 19 percent in value terms.

The export quantity at 1,68,755 tonnes recorded a rise of 24 percent. In dollar terms the export value stood at $137.5 million.

Coir Board chairman A C Jose said the exports surpassed the target of Rs 572 crore ($130 million). In 2005-06, coir exports had touched 1,36,026 tonnes valued at Rs 508.44 crore.

The US is the single largest market with a share of more than 37 percent of the total export. European countries together share more than 41 percent of the export while 22 percent is shared by the remaining countries.

The door mats and mattings comprised the bulk of the exports. The export of rubberized coir and tufted mat using PVC and rubber bases registered significant increase. For 2007-08, the board has set a target of Rs 660 crore or $165 million. "The strong rupee is expected to hit coir exports hard unless the Commerce Ministry chips in with some help," Mr Jose said.

The board is making efforts to beef up the domestic market for coir products, which at present is pegged at Rs 150 crore, he said. The board is hoping to bring maximum number of buyers from abroad and across the country for the India International coir fair slated to be held in Alappuzha in December 2007.

Debobrat Ghose

Jan. 26--The ministry of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) has sought a nearly 80% hike in budget allocation for 2011-2012, over R2,400 crore in the last budget. The ministry aims to strengthen the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), expand National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) and initiate reforms in the Khadi sector.

Laying a special emphasis on the PMEGP, the government wants to earmark more than 50% of the R4,300-crore demand for the segment to generate more jobs across India. Nearly R900 crore has been projected towards marketing assistance, skill development and technological support to entrepreneurs.

Nearly 8% of the total demand is likely to be used for expansion of the NSIC. The two other segments on the government's priority list are the enhancement of the export potential of the Coir Board and the cluster development for traditional artisans, for which nearly R100 crore has been planned.

The government may do away or reduce the 2% subvention on export loan to MSMEs.

Meanwhile, the MSME sector has demanded the adoption of a modified Goods & Services Taxes (GST) till the nationwide implementation of the GST.

"Since the GST implementation is getting delayed, we're suggesting a modified GST, which will aid transition to the GST regime," said Anil Bhardwaj, secretary general, Federation of micro & small and medium enterprises (FISME).

In its pre-budget wish list, the FISME has suggested an amendment in the Central Sales Tax (CST) Act to withdraw the status of 'Registered dealer' from utilities and all such service providers who do not have to collect sales tax on products. "This will

help service providers to buy goods from suppliers outside their state by paying 2% CST as against the state VAT of 12.5% levied on purchases within the state," said Bhardwaj.

The body has demanded tax breaks for "employment intensive" units rather than on the basis of capital invested.

MP3Help Mar. 24--KOCHI: Recognising the role played by the SMEs in the coir sector in India, the Commonwealth Secretariat representing 53 states, has decided to organize the

sixth Commonwealth-India small business development programme in Kerala between March 25 and 30. The programme, which will be jointly hosted by Coir Board and Exim Bank, will have 70 delegates from 34 Commonwealth countries. Ram Venuprasad, advisor (enterprise development) special advisory services division of Commonwealth Secretariat told reporters here that coir sector was dominated by small sector and so was an ideal choice for the conference. Coir Board chairman A.C,Jose said since nearly 98 percent of the commonwealth countries produce coconut the board could facilitate technology transfer and promote export of coir products. The board has identified Africa, particularly South Africa, as a new destination for the marketing of Indian coir products. The conference will be inaugurated by Union Minister of Small Scale Industries and Agro & Rural Industry Mahabir Prasad and Chief Minister V.S.Achutanandan. It will be spread over Kochi, Alappuzha and Kalady. Coir Pith: A Potential Agro Residue for Anaerobic Digestion. Authors:

Though utility of coir pith has been claimed in different applications, an efficient and accepted technology for its maximum utilization is not yet made available. Objective of the study was to check the feasibility of biomethanation of coir pith and to investigate the conditions for improved digestion. The study shows that, without any pretreatment, substrate could sustain the anaerobic digestion process with the methane yield of about 38.1 per kilogram dry weight after 44 days. Reduction in the particle size improved methane yield about 1.5 times compared to natural sample. Whereas acid treatment suppressed methane formation, alkali treatment has resulted in a slight improvement. In short, the present work does give affirmative results and scopes for the process of biomethanation with the conclusion that more research efforts

can transform coir pith into a good renewable energy resource. Ban on use of coconut husk for biomass power generation sought. Source: TIDEE (TERI Information Digest on Energy & Environment); Jun2008, Vol. 7 Issue 2, p189-189, 1/3p Document Type: Article Subject Terms: *BIOMASS COCONUT products COIR industry CORDAGE industry TRADE associations Geographic Terms: TAMIL Nadu (India) INDIA People: KAMARAJ, C. M.

Abstract: The article reports on the proposed total ban on use of coconut husk for biomass power generation in Tamil Nadu, India. The ban is being demanded by the Federation of Tamil Nadu State Coir Associations because they believe that the use of coconut husk, the main raw material for coir industries, would affect labourintensive coir industries in the state. The federation also urges both state and central governments to extend financial and technical assistance for value addition and marketing of coir products. C. M. Kamaraj, president of the All India Coir Federation, claims that the use of husk would create a shortage of raw materials for coir industries. POLLUTION DUE TO COIR RETTING AND ITS EFFECT ON ESTUARINE FLORA AND FAUNA. Authors: Remani, K.N. Nirmala, E. Nair, S.R. Source: International Journal of Environmental Studies; Jan1989, Vol. 32 Issue 4, p285, 11p Document Type:

Article Subject Terms: *POLLUTION *ESTUARINE plants COIR industry Abstract: One of the striking features of Kerala state is the continuous chain of lagoons or backwaters existing along the coastal region. The backwaters support rich and diverse life forms and provide crucial nurseries for shrimps and fishes as well as habitat for oysters, clams and mussels which later enrich the ocean and make Kerala the principal exporter of marine products amongst the states of India. The shallow fringes of the backwaters and the channels drawn from them are used for retting of coconut husk. It adversely affects the productivity of the backwaters and is harmful to marine fisheries. The retting of coconut husks in backwaters is brought about by the pectinolytic activity of micro organisms especially bacteria fungi and yeasts degrading the fibre binding materials of the husk and liberating large quantities of organic matter and chemicals into the environment, including pectin, pentosan, tannins, polyphenols, etc. Consequently hydrogen sulphide, phosphate and nitrate contents increase while dissolved oxygen and community diversity of plankton decrease in the ambient waters during the retting process. The present study is to evaluate pollution due to coir retting activity and its influence on quality of water and estuarine flora and fauna. It can be used as fuel in loose form or in briquettes. This study investigates different physical properties of coir pith with respect to its moisture content (10.1 to 60.2%w.b.) and particle size (0.098 to 0.925mm). Porosity and particle density varied from 0.623 to 0.862 and from 0.939 to 0.605 gm/cc respectively. Bulk density and static coefficient of friction against mild steel were in the range of 0.097 to 0.341gm/cc and 0.5043 to 0.6332 respectively. Models were developed for the above properties.
