Here are three living things three-toed sloths, sloth moths, and trichophilus. They
look far different from one another. However, there is a strong tie among them. It may be
much more interesting than you think!
Meet the three-toed sloth, probably the slowest animal in the world.
These sloths don’t get enough energy from their food, so they move
very little to save energy. However, when nature calls, they s-l-o-w-l-y
climb down the trees. Although it is dangerous for them to go down
to the ground and poop, they still do it once a week. Why don’t they
Three-Toed Sloth just defecate in the trees?
The sloths have some little friends sloth moths! These moths live
in the hair of the sloths because it’s like a comfortable hotel for them.
They need the sloths to defecate on the ground so that they can lay eggs
in their poop. The baby insects grow up in the poop. Then, they move
back to live in the hair of the sloths when the sloths climb down the
Sloth Moth trees. After the sloth moths die, their bodies become trichophilus’ food.
34. What happens after a three-toed sloth climbs down a tree to defecate?
(A) It moves quickly back to the tree because it’s dangerous.

Our City
Our Home
Ideas from Around Richard Smith
When people say our city is far from being good or convenient enough, I totally agree.
However, when they start to get angry at the government and keep asking for more, well, I
can’t agree with that. In fact, the government is doing much more than many people think.
Take the benches outside the public library for example. They were there for people to sit on
and read a book. Together with the trees, they used to make the library look like a wonderful
place. However, some people slept on them for hours, and others enjoyed their food on the
benches but didn’t clean them up. In the end, the government had no choice but to remove
all the benches to keep the area clean.
The benches show us only a very small part of the problem. To enjoy things in public
places, we all should learn to use them in the right way. If some people only think about
themselves, they may cause trouble for others. Getting angry with them is surely not helpful.
To me, teaching them a lesson by giving them a fine is not enough, either.
We must go further to deal with the problem by starting with young kids in school. It is
more important than getting good grades. If we only teach them subjects like English and
math, how can we expect them to grow into great citizens in the future? We need lessons to
teach our children to take care of our city. This way, we can reach out to the next generation
and truly help the city get better. After all, a city can only be good when it has good citizens.

37. What does Richard Smith think of the city government?
(A) It never spends people’s money wisely.
(B) It actually does a lot to make the city better.
(C) It does many things, but most of them are not helpful at all.
(D) It should learn to listen to its people carefully.
38. Why did Richard Smith talk about the benches outside the public library?
(A) He wanted to give an example of people’s wrong ways of using the things in a public place.
(B) He brought that up to tell people to remember the history of the city.
(C) He wanted everyone to take action to get those benches back.
(D) He talked about that because he was really mad at the government.
39. According to Richard Smith, why is it important to teach kids about taking care of the city?
according to
(A) It helps them learn English and math better.
(B) It makes them use public places more often.
(C) It helps them become better citizens in the future.
(D) It gives them the power to rule other people.
