Sandy: Dave is not going to the movies with us this weekend. It’s the second time this month.
It’s strange.
Greg: Well, maybe it’s because he is seeing someone. In fact, I saw him with a beautiful
woman at a tea house the other day.
Sandy: What’s the tea, Greg?
Greg: Too bad! They had coffee, not tea.
Sandy: No, Greg. I mean I want to know more about Dave and the woman!
Greg: Oh, I see. Well, they were at a nice tea house on York Street. I was reading when I saw

Why did Eric shout at me today?

I really don’t understand. I took those photos just to make a great video
for him, and I never meant to hurt or laugh at him. During the 8 months,
he worked very hard to lose weight for the dance show. Wasn’t it a great
idea to take a picture every week to record his changes?

RE: Why did Eric shout at me today?

I almost cried when I was watching the video. To be honest, I already
forgot about Eric’s size before watching it. He’s now a lot thinner than
before! Maybe Eric was not angry with you. He just felt embarrassed
when you showed the video to everyone. Believe me, he will thank you
for making the video in the future.

RE: Why did Eric shout at me today?

I like the video, too. It was hard to notice Eric’s changes because we
saw him every day. However, the 35 photos in the video showed us his
hard work perfectly. In fact, I think Eric liked it, too. He was angry just
because you took those photos without telling him first. No one likes that.

RE: Why did Eric shout at me today?

To give Eric a surprise doesn’t sound like a good reason to me. Eric tried
so hard to lose weight, and he doesn’t want anyone to remember his past
self. It might be great to make the video for Eric as a gift, but it was a
big mistake to play it in front of the class without letting him know first.
You’d better say sorry to Eric as soon as possible.

Here are three living things three-toed sloths, sloth moths, and trichophilus. They
look far different from one another. However, there is a strong tie among them. It may be
much more interesting than you think!

Meet the three-toed sloth, probably the slowest animal in the world.
These sloths don’t get enough energy from their food, so they move
very little to save energy. However, when nature calls, they s-l-o-w-l-y
climb down the trees. Although it is dangerous for them to go down
to the ground and poop, they still do it once a week. Why don’t they
Three-Toed Sloth just defecate in the trees?

The sloths have some little friends sloth moths! These moths live
in the hair of the sloths because it’s like a comfortable hotel for them.
They need the sloths to defecate on the ground so that they can lay eggs
in their poop. The baby insects grow up in the poop. Then, they move
back to live in the hair of the sloths when the sloths climb down the
Sloth Moth trees. After the sloth moths die, their bodies become trichophilus’ food.

That’s right. Trichophilus is the third member in this cool circle. It is

very special, and people can’t find it anywhere else but on the sloths.
Trichophilus makes some parts of the sloths’ bodies look green and
helps them hide in the trees. What’s more, the sloths get to eat some
trichophilus when they are cleaning their hair. Eating this plant is also
Trichophilus a great help to the sloths’ health.

Our City
Our Home
Ideas from Around Richard Smith

When people say our city is far from being good or convenient enough, I totally agree.
However, when they start to get angry at the government and keep asking for more, well, I
can’t agree with that. In fact, the government is doing much more than many people think.

Take the benches outside the public library for example. They were there for people to sit on
and read a book. Together with the trees, they used to make the library look like a wonderful
place. However, some people slept on them for hours, and others enjoyed their food on the
benches but didn’t clean them up. In the end, the government had no choice but to remove
all the benches to keep the area clean.

The benches show us only a very small part of the problem. To enjoy things in public
places, we all should learn to use them in the right way. If some people only think about
themselves, they may cause trouble for others. Getting angry with them is surely not helpful.
To me, teaching them a lesson by giving them a fine is not enough, either.

We must go further to deal with the problem by starting with young kids in school. It is
more important than getting good grades. If we only teach them subjects like English and
math, how can we expect them to grow into great citizens in the future? We need lessons to
teach our children to take care of our city. This way, we can reach out to the next generation
and truly help the city get better. After all, a city can only be good when it has good citizens.

government remove cause citizen generation

11
37. What does Richard Smith think of the city government?
(A) It never spends people’s money wisely.
(B) It actually does a lot to make the city better.
(C) It does many things, but most of them are not helpful at all.
(D) It should learn to listen to its people carefully.

38. Why did Richard Smith talk about the benches outside the public library?
(A) He wanted to give an example of people’s wrong ways of using the things in a public place.
(B) He brought that up to tell people to remember the history of the city.
(C) He wanted everyone to take action to get those benches back.
(D) He talked about that because he was really mad at the government.

39. According to Richard Smith, why is it important to teach kids about taking care of the city?
according to
(A) It helps them learn English and math better.
(B) It makes them use public places more often.
(C) It helps them become better citizens in the future.
(D) It gives them the power to rule other people.

Dengue Fever Spraying Notice

After the rainy season, the number of dengue fever cases keeps rising. In order to stop it,
there will be wide spraying in this area at 10:00 a.m. on July 28 . The spraying
covers not only the outdoor areas but also the inside space of your house, including your
living room, kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms. The spraying will last for about 30 minutes.

Before the Spraying:

❶ Please check inside and around your house carefully for any items with water in them
and clean them up.

❷ Please put all food, plates, bowls, and so on into drawers or boxes.
❸ Feel free to cover items like sofas and beds. However, your covering should not stop
the spraying from going into every corner of the space.

❹ Close all your windows and doors.

❺ Pets must leave. If you have fish, cover your fishbowl and turn off the air pump.

❻ Please hand your key to a neighbor if you aren’t home. We will enter your house with
the help of the police when no one is home.

After the Spraying:

❶ Wait for 1 hour after the spraying. Once you enter your house, open the windows and
doors to let fresh air in first, and then wait outside for another 30 minutes.

❷ Please be careful as the floor might be a little wet.

❸ The repellent will not hurt your health, but it’s a good idea to wash your hands after
you touch the items with the repellent on them.

If you have any questions, please call the Health Department at 12-334-556. Thank you for
your help and understanding. Let’s save our town from dengue fever together!

There are many stories in the history of music. To some people,

Jean-Baptiste Lully’s death is probably the saddest and
most surprising one.
Lully was a gifted musician from Italy. He was born in
1632 and was famous for making beautiful music. He showed
his interest in music when he was very young. After he moved
to France, he learned more and was able to bring his own music
to a new level. People loved listening to his music, and he even
became King Louis XIV’s favorite.
Lully was good at writing music. Also, he was proud to hold
a conducting staff and lead a group of musicians. 42. It was long, heavy, and not easy
to use. However, no one saw that as a problem until January 1687.
In 1687, something sad happened. When Lully was conducting his own music Te Deum,
he struck his foot with the conducting staff by mistake. Although doctors tried their best to
help him, Lully’s foot got terribly infected in a short time. 43.
Lully’s death marked a turning point in the history of conducting. Now, we have lighter
and better tools for conducting. And of course, Lully’s music lives on and keeps bringing joy
to people even today.
musician conducting staff conduct
strike struckinfected

42. (A) In fact, a lot of musicians in France wanted Lully to teach and to lead them.
(B) The conducting staff of Lully’s time was very different from today’s conducting tool.
(C) To Lully, leading a group of musicians was much easier than writing music.
(D) But Lully never thought about killing anyone with the conducting staff.

43. (A) He even wrote several songs about his days in the hospital.
(B) After that, Lully could only use his left hand to hold the conducting staff.
(C) This proud musician almost died, and it took him a very long time to get well.
(D) Lully became very sick and passed away in March of that year.
