Read about automatic teller machines. Pay special attention to nouns with and without
articles.

Automatic Teller Machines

An automatic teller is a machine that lets you make a deposit or take out cash from your bank
account. You use a plastic card that looks like a credit card. You can get an ATM card from
the bank where you have your account. When the bank gives you your card, it also gives you
a personal identification number (PIN). You should memorize the number. If you lose your
card, no one can use it without your special number.

The bank that gave you your card has a machine. However, you don’t have to use you
card at this bank only. You can use your ATM card in many other banks. There are also
machines in other locations: shopping malls, supermarkets, and office buildings, for example.

Can you use your card in every machine? No. On the back of your card, there are
symbols. You can use your card only at machines that have these symbols.

If you use a machine that doesn’t belong to your bank, you might have to pay a fee.
How do you know that the machine you are using belongs to your bank? The screen will tell
you if you have to pay a fee and how much it is. You can cancel the transaction if you do not
want to pay the fee. You can save money by using machines that are owned by the bank.
People use ATMs for convenience. You can get cash or make a deposit twenty-four
hours a day.
