MODULE DESCRIPTION

Structural Mechanics module provides further knowledge on number of important

Introduction topics on structural mechanics which were not covered in Engineering mechanics
module. This includes further understanding on stresses on structures, and their
combined effects etc.
At the end of the module student will be able to:
Learning
Outcomes LO1 : Determine stresses for flexure, shear, torsion and unsymmetrical bending in
structures

LO2 : Apply the concepts of different types of stresses in structural elements and
determine their combined effects

LO3 : Evaluate material failure in structures using the transformation of stresses and
various failure theories

LO4 : Analyse statically indeterminate structures by using approximate methods

Assessment Assessment activities:
Criteria  Mid semester examination will carry 30% of the total marks.
 Tutorials, quizzes and laboratory work will carry 10% of the total marks.
 End of semester final examination will carry for 60% marks.

 Midterm Examination 30% LO1 and LO2

 Assignments 10% LO1-LO4
 Final Examination 60% LO1-LO4
TOTAL 100%
Module To pass this module students are required to achieve a pass mark for both the

Generic Information

Any type of plagiarism is not allowed.

Plagiarism: Academic honesty is crucial to a student’s credibility and self-esteem, and

ultimately reflects the values and morals of the Institute as whole. A student may
work together with one or a group of students discussing assignment content,
identifying relevant references, and debating issues relevant to the subject. Plagiarism
occurs when the work of another person, or persons, is used and presented as one’s
own.
