SECTION D
31 The following questions are case-based questions. Each question has an internal
choice and carries 4 (1+1+2) marks each. Read the passage carefully and
answer the questions that follow.
The polarity of carbon-halogen bond of alkyl halides is responsible for their
nucleophilic substitution, elimination and their reaction with metal atoms to form
organometallic compounds. Nucleophilic substitution reactions are categorised
into SN1 and SN2 on the basis of their kinetic properties. Chirality has a profound
role in understanding the reaction mechanisms of SN1 and SN2 reactions. SN2
reactions of chiral alkyl halides are characterised by the inversion of configuration
while SN1 reactions are characterised by racemisation. A number of polyhalogen
compounds e.g., dichloromethane, chloroform, iodoform, carbon tetrachloride,
freon and DDT have many industrial applications. However, some of these
compounds cannot be easily decomposed and even cause depletion of ozone
layer and are proving environmental hazards.
Answer the following questions:
a) Explain the mechanism of SN2 reaction and predict the type of product
formed?
b) In the following pairs of halogen compounds, which compound undergoes
faster SN1 reaction?
OR
c) Explain why
(i) Allyl chloride is hydrolysed more readily than n-propyl chloride?
(ii) Write the structure of the major organic product in each of the following
reactions:
OR
c) a) Name two hormones which mediate responses to external stimuli?
b) What are vitamins?
SECTION E
The following questions are long answer type and carry 5 marks each. Two
questions have an internal choice.

following:
(i) CH3COOH dissolved in water
(ii) CH3COOH dissolved in benzene
b) What type of azeotropic mixture will be formed by a solution of acetone

interactions that develop in the solution.
c) An aqueous solution of 3.12g of Barium chloride in 250 g of water is found
to boil at 100.0832°C. Calculate the degree of dissociation of Barium
