Every day we come across several health related news and hints in newspapers, magazines, and TV
shows. Needless to say, most of us are pressed for time and give less importance to such information in
this fast-track world. But, it is necessary to take a reality check on our awareness of dietary supplements
required for effective functioning of our health system. There are many TV shows offering leads on vital
elements and dietary information essential for our well-being. Modern television is not only a great
source of entertainment but also gives useful information related to lifestyle and health. New-age
television service offers a host of vivid channels ranging from entertainment, news, sports, food, health,
and spiritual. It is a bundle of everything you need. You need not look anywhere else for information on
any topic.

As I was surfing the channels of my TV powered by Time Warner Cable, a rare discussion on deficiency of
vitamins and minerals on a health show caught my attention. As the show progressed, I got to know of
some of the important factors that not many of us are aware of. I would like to illustrate those ideas, in
particular about an essential mineral – copper. Not everyone’s got a cast iron stomach. It is important to
keep track of what we eat and how we eat. There are many such foods which are a source of vital
elements necessary for human system. Copper is one such mineral responsible for a healthy nervous
system. In the brain, copper ions are vital for neural synapses-responsible for intellect and memory
capabilities. Adequate copper supplements intake reduce the risk of developing coronary heart diseases.
Needless to say, copper is as much essential as any other nutrients for the overall functioning of human
system.

Copper is a trace mineral that is essential to the health of all living things. It is one small group of
metallic elements which are essential to the well-being of humans. In humans, copper plays a vital role
in the keep up of healthy nervous systems and the proper function of organs. These elements along with
amino acids and fatty acids, as well as vitamins like iron are required to form healthy red blood cells for
normal metabolic processes. Copper helps the body to preserve nerve cells and form a protective
covering of connective tissues by synthesizing collagen. It even acts as an antioxidant and gets rid of free
radicals that can cause harm cells. Human body needs copper to produce energy and that the body
cannot synthesize copper on its own. Hence, it needs a supply of regular amounts of copper from human
diet.

Copper is found in a wide variety of foods. The best sources of copper are liver, seafood like oysters,
shellfish, nuts, seeds, dark green leafy vegetables, dried legumes and chocolate, wheat-bran cereals, and
whole-grain products. Human body contains 1.4 to 2.1 mg copper per kg of body weight. However, too
much or too little ingestion of copper can result in diverse health condition of copper excess or
deficiency in the body. Instead of aiding for human well-being, it may result in a set of adverse health
effects. Copper deficiency might lead to anemia, low body temperature, bone fractures and
osteoporosis, low white blood cell count, irregular heartbeat, loss of pigment from the skin, and thyroid
problems. Increased intake of copper results in nausea, vomiting, abdominal and muscle pain, but this
can be solved by increased intake of zinc.

It is very much important to monitor your daily intake of copper. Copper is readily available in a range of
food products. You can even take copper supplements under your medical practitioner’s supervision. A
well-balanced diet provides adequate daily amounts of copper without the need for additional
supplements.
