Research Report Part 2
INTRODUCTION:
First of all let us discuss, what are beauty standards in general. These are the
standards of beauty set by our society or culture in regards to one’s appearance .
According to the report of FHE health website which is a healthcare institution that
delivers medically personalized treatment for those suffering from Behavioral
Health Disorders. According to statistics report from the Nation Eating Disorders
Association, 5.2% of females meet the criteria for anorexia nervosa, bulimia
nervosa or a binge eating disorder because of the extreme pressure of being
beautiful in the eyes of the world and according to the ISAPS (international society
of aesthetic plastic surgery) report there has been almost 41% increase in aesthetic
surgeries from 2018 to 2022. There is also a report from ISAPS indicating that
almost 11.8% increase in overall worldwide aesthetic surgeries due to current
beauty trends. (FHEhealth).
Since physical features are the first thing you see while communicating with
someone therefore they also play a very vital role in our society. We all live in a
society in which we are surrounded by people such as family and friends and every
one no matter how close a blood relation he has to you ,has a different physical
appearance. Due to which socially and culturally people has preferred certain
features of people over the others and somewhat favored those who are more
physically attractive. Which according to the FHE Health institute has created
mental issue such as eating disorders, low self-esteem, , ,self hatred and many
more. According to their report almost 31% of teenagers and 35% of adults feel
ashamed of their looks simply because they don’t scale unto the societies
standards.( FHEhealth)
1
Even after all this survey and experimentation there is still no further development
in how to stop this issues or no counselling centers that gives council on this issue
to young generation. Especially in area were there is poverty. There are only heavy
fees medical centers and therapy center available for people. There is lack of
empathy in people regarding this matter and their should be more education given
to people so they can openly discuss this and overcome this issue as a community.
Perceptions surrounding beauty and body types not only vary by culture, but have
evolved significantly throughout history. Each Era had its own beauty standards,
for example :
• Ancient Egypt (c. 1292 – 1069 B.C.) Beauty standards. In this era, the ideal
woman is described as: slender, narrow shoulders and high waist.
• Ancient Greece (c. 500 – 300 B.C.)Beauty standards during this time period,
the ideal woman was: plump, full bodied and light skinned.
• Han Dynasty (c. 206 B.C. – 220 A.D.)Beauty standards. In this time period,
the ideal woman had: slim waist, large eyes, small feet and pale skin.
• Italian Renaissance (c. 1400 – 1700)Beauty standards. In this era, the ideal
woman is described as having: ample bosom, rounded stomach, full hips and
full skin.
• Victorian England (c. 1837 – 1901)Beauty standards. This time period
featured beautiful women as: desirably plump, full figured, cinched waist.
• Roaring Twenties (c. 1920s)Beauty standards. In this time period, the ideal
woman had:
• Flat Chest, Downplayed Waist, Short Bob Hairstyle and Boyish Figure,
• Golden Age Of Hollywood (c. 1930s – 1950s)Beauty standards. In this era,
the ideal woman is described as having: Curves, Hourglass Figure, Large
Breasts and Slim Waist
• Swinging Sixties (c. 1960s)Beauty standards. This time period adored this
female look:
• Willowy, Thin,Adolescent Physique and Long, slim Legs
• Supermodel Era (c. 1980s)Beauty standards. This era celebrated this body
type:
• Athletic, Tall, Toned Arms and Svelte, but Curvy
• Heroin Chic (c. 1990s)Beauty standards. The ideal body type of this time
period featured:
2
• Waifish, Extremely Thin, Translucent Skin and Androgynous
• Postmodern Beauty (c. 2000s – Today) Beauty standards. Our current beauty
standards for women include: Flat Stomach, ‘Healthy’ Skinny, Large Breasts
+ Butt and Thigh Gap
Through history one can see that beauty trends and standards has been set from as
long as one can dive into human history. (Science of People)
According to many reports and surveys it has been proven numerous times that
majority of the time people hire someone base off their looks rather than their skill
set. To prove this point Comila Shahani-Denning Associate Professor from the
Department of Psychology from the University Of Hofstar also conducted a
research in which she made several points proving importance of beauty in
business and job. For examples she said in her article from hofstar university that
people with only hire beautiful people for their jobs and business as a good first
impression on client. Also she stated that whether on mobile, tv or any social
media platform you could clearly see that most people are attractive looking and
already successfully. ( orps-shahani-denning-spring03)
.Physical appearance without any doubt does play a role in selecting a partner. But
how much role this factor play for both genders is a question itself. In experiments,
researchers figured out what men and women really want in a mate. In one study
conducted by economist Raymond Fisman and colleagues for Columbia
University, 392 single men and women were invited to participate in a speed-
dating event. Each participant went on between 10 and 20 four-minute speed dates
with members of the opposite sex. (ISAPS)
Unsurprisingly, the data collected reveals that both men and women really care a
lot about attractiveness (though men care ever so slightly more). However, for a
women intelligence was far more important than for man and the results showed
that an intelligent men raised his chances of getting picked by 4.5%. But for men
even a one scale increase in women would make her changes of getting picked up
by 2.5%. One more experiment conducted by them showed the result would
increase for women being picked by men by 12% with an increase of beauty and
for men it would increase by 14% in an increase in intelligence. Due to this women
3
feel even more pressured to maintain and improve their physical appearance by
means of natural or artificial ways. (ISAPS)
Through this research my mission is to raise awareness about such sensitive issue
that almost every 1 out of 3 people would face. And on top of it people in our
community and society would gives them insensitive remarks on their appearance.
I would love that people would try to be more considerate about such issue and the
one who is suffering should build up his own confidence to overcome this fake
scenario of beauty. Because the world is much more than just beauty. Parents,
friend and overall community should be aware of this issue and should not give
such pressure or remarks to their loved one’s who are already struggling with this.
Thesis Statement:
Society’s obsession with achieving unattainable beauty ideals promoted on social
media is leading to widespread feelings of inadequacy and low self-worth.
Through my art I showed how it is affecting myself.
4
Methodology:
This research is majority based on quantitative research but also contains
qualitative research such as previous experiments of people from different
universities and laboratories and survey conducted by me and other people that
previously conducted research and surveys on this topics. It is based on statistics of
how much percent of people are affected by beauty standards and which genders is
more affected by it. According to my research majority of women are conscious
about their looks because of the fact that almost 80% percent of men prefer good
looking women. Which also result for every 3rd women to be conscious of their
looks and later in life be pressured by society to change their appearance. This also
causes many mental and physical health issues for women. This research will help
you to understand this issue and would be helpful to spread awareness and to
educate people on negative impacts of beauty.

Chapter 2
Literature Review
The first step in this research involved a thorough review of existing literature on Eurocentric
beauty standards and their impact on women of different cultures and ethnicity. The literature
review provided a foundation for understanding the historical and cultural context of beauty
standards and their evolution over time. Key themes explored included the portrayal of beauty in
media, the psychological effects of beauty standards, and the concept of aesthetics.
Historians can trace our use of advantage merchandise and cosmetic back to 4,000 BC, and the
old Egyptians the one secondhand kohl to build exciting eyes. Today, the general advantage
manufacturing, that covers entirety from sideburn and skin be fond of structure is an supposed
$425 billion manufacturing. The experiences of the advantage manufacturing is as different and
interesting as the lipsticks and capture polishes made public at your local structure counter.Early
advantage and beautifying regimes relied burdensome upon normal factors, containing beans,
bugs, and black to design a assortment of banner, and many output were secondhand for in
addition individual purpose, a viewing of contemporary’s composition multi-tuskers. Early
advantage situations too exploited the area’s timber, regionally sourcing open elements for
scrubs, pastes, and exfoliates. This pattern of utilizing local, organic factors is an continuous
style during the whole of the experiences of the advantage manufacturing.
In the late 19th and early 20th centennial, the advantage manufacturing enhanced an main and
practicable course way for mothers, exceptionally African-American daughters, the one built
device created particularly for otherwise constitute grass. Madame CJ Walker and Marjorie
Joyner were two African -American executives the one secondhand their knowledge to forge a
new standard of advantage for their societies. During the “flourishing 20’s” the advantage
manufacturing left in sudden progress. In New York, Elizabeth Arden unlocked her sign
showroom and started contribution “create overcome” to her customers. On the west coast, Max
Factor established the first support for film heroes, and Greta Garbo escorted in the term of
complex eyebrows and the need for threadlike growth on animate being pencils and mascara was
innate. (Avenue Five Institute)
During the war, the advantage manufacturing accepted a efficient turn, accompanying focus and
importance on building sunblock for officers. The fundamentals of star guardianship can
immediately exist any of various advantage fruit and is a mainstay for most first cosmetic. In the
1960’s daughters proceeded “mad” for modern, reflect the naive, lifeless look of glamorous
female model appearing on magazine covers Twiggy, while the 1970’s led a more everyday
revere girls’s advantage selections. Everything was substantial in the 1980’s, and more difficult
6
hairstyles and situations led stylists to the prominence of the advantage manufacturing. The
1980’s and early 1990’s were still the day of the “Super Model”, accompanying wives here and
there bothersome to amuse the emblematic looks of Linda, Cindy, and Naomi. The 1990’s
proverb a resume a more unrefined look, accompanying modern ways of living influences like
Grunge and fashionable-spring commanding advantage flows. Towards completely of the ten of
something, deep, dark brinks, nails, and eyes were in the current style- and in the current style.
Today, the advantage manufacturing has restored to allure ancestries, accompanying erudition
located produce achievement double and threefold responsibility. Women go to look delightful
they want their cosmetics and wig care device to benefit ruling class also. Beauty balms, fixing
creams, exhaustive serums, and antagonistic-declining formulas are planned to reveal a woman’s
advantage, correct some imperfections or flaws, and help her shine two together everywhere.

promoted it on Twitter, Instagram and by way of influencers and stakeholders on their public
television principles. The survey taken 7878 answers. Many accused joint stories about their
connection accompanying their carcass and their image. This is a summary of the key ideas that
arose from the survey. What they well-informed;1.The plurality of people feel otherwise about
their bulk concept most of moment of truth.2.Lockdown created society feel bad about their body

feel mirrored in the representations they see in radio and displaying5.Images on public radio
have a substantial influence young folk6.People want change the adulthood of people feel
otherwise about their frame concept most of moment of truth.
“It’s comprehensive. I’m remorseful of my burden and consider it all the time. It stops me from
achievement belongings I be going to do. Holds me back from being 100% me.”(Man, 25–34)
61% of women and 66% of teenagers feel negative or very negative about their material concept
most of the time. People across the UK from various societies are wrestling accompanying weak
physique concept. Young people are more inclined identify with negative affections about their
presentation; 65% of under 18s hope skilled was an ‘ideal’ material type compared

population are at greater risk of experience negative emotions about their presence. Over 6 in
each 10 mothers feel in another way about their physique. Diet education, post-partum pressures,
being bombarded accompanying representations of photograph shopped, rewrote and sexualized
daughters in addition to the developing process and the lack of visual representation of earlier
daughters are entirety that daughters understood us cause bureaucracy to identify with weak
body countenance. ( www.parliament.uk )
This research also found out the negative impacts that are caused on younger generations due to
the wide spread use of social media.
Today's beauty standards are influenced by a variety of factors, including third- and fourth-
generation people trying out new fashions in an effort to gain social acceptance. Social media has
a significant impact on the purchasing decisions of millennials—72 percent of them purchase
beauty products based on posts on Instagram and other social networks. The application of
cosmetics to beautify or alter one's appearance, either artistically or to conceal flaws, is what
makeup is all about. Jang-Soon and Hye-Jin looked into the makeup preferences of 240 teenage
men. According to the findings, one of the primary reasons for their social success was their
appearance. Cosmetics were generally viewed favorably by the young, unmarried male
respondents who lived in cities. Cosmetics have gained popularity as a result of bloggers'
constant social media advertising. Due to digital alteration, social media images are idealized and
unreal, setting high expectations for society's members. In order to be accepted as beauty
standards, imperfections are removed through airbrushing and the use of other digital apps to
whiten teeth, slim waists, and reduce sizes. These methods might additionally prompt adverse
results of expanded body disappointment, body adjustment and low confidence issues. Eating
disorders and body dissatisfaction disorders are linked to the spread of unrealistic social media
images of feminism, beauty, success, and body shape. ( Wenting Mu & Fan Wu)
Another area where social media has a significant impact is beauty apps and filters. In a
"pedagogy of defect," beauty apps encourage women to see and monitor themselves. They
incorporate channels and adjustment applications, medical procedure give a shot applications,
and tasteful benchmarking applications which assist people with envisioning how they will care
for specific changes, for example, teeth brightening, eye pack evacuation and furthermore
whether the singular looks old or youthful. The term "body modification" refers to the deliberate
or ongoing alteration of an individual's human anatomy or appearance. It includes two
components: the processes that alter the form or contours of the body, such as metabolic
manipulation (weight lifting, extreme dieting, use of drugs/steroids, hormones), cosmetic
surgeries and procedures (liposuction, face-lifts, rhinoplasty, botox, eye lash extensions), genital
surgery and sex reassignment surgery, restriction or compression Due to social comparison,
young women and teenage girls who followed fitness boards on Pinterest were more likely to
8
intend to engage in extreme crash dieting or exercise. This led to feelings of inadequacy and
body dissatisfaction. ( Wenting Mu & Fan Wu)
All the surveys, experiment and interviews prove each and every time that how much the
physical appearance effects one person and this research specifically focuses on the negatives of
such beauty standards and how it should not be promoted and should be realized by the youth of
this generation that such a cycle of thinking of only physical appearance should be stopped as
soon as possible. They should start building character and morals rather than just beautify
themselves.
The research gab is that the young generation is also exposed to such a content on very early
stages of life due to which their manners, health and intellect has been deeply effected. There are
no such action taken for the benefit of young generation so that they are not exposed to such
extreme contact or topics and can be saved from such ideas and concepts, so that they can focus
on who they are as a person rather then focus on something. The government should also be
involved in this so the parents could be educated in order to save the next generation from the
downfall of their lives.

Chapter 3
The artist’s who has worked similar concept to mine are a few among which these are some that
inspire me the most:
Sarah Armani:
Is the influence of friendly media and new electronics otherwise shaping our idea of advantage?
Stemming from her own personal occurrence, ingraining from a mixed educational background,
Rotterdam-located able to be seen with eyes artist Sarah Armani has an continuous attraction for
visual idea. Using fine arts, film and found movie, Amrani form you question modern-era society
and allure advantage standards while fact-finding female enlightening identity and allure
likeness.
Tha artist was brought up in two different cultures, one being the Moroccan and tbe other being
the Netherlandish culture. This made her often feel the she belonged to neither one of them and
sometimes out of space. In between this she found that many of the young girls dispite their
culture and backgrounds would go on to change the way they look. Many of the ways she
mentioned were botox, plastic surgery and artificially editing themselves to look like someone
who is perfect image of beauty. Through this she produced an exhibition called “Terror Of
Beauty”. (Metal Magazine)
These are some of her artworks in which she perfectly portrays the horrible life transitions.

“I’m a 29-year-old visual artist from Imphal and am currently based in New Delhi. I have lived
in the south of Delhi for the last 10 years, where my career has continued to grow. This is where
I’ve regained a sense of self-assurance. I have attained a Bachelor’s degree in fine arts from
Jamia Millia Islamia Institute and I have a postgraduate diploma in visual effects and animation
from the Anwar Jamal Kidwai Mass Communication Research Centre”.
The artist tells that’s he always had honored his heritage and you will always see a part of his
culture or heritage in his work. He believes that God love variety and diversity, that’s why he
created us all in difference with each other. He believes that we all are part of nature and should
not be insecure about our own culture and its beauty. (Shweta Rao)
“I want my art to help people see and appreciate the beauty in the smallest things. I hope my
work makes them more open to explore the differences in cultures and diversity around them.”

My artwork:
I have been inspired from many other artist as well such as Edward stitchen, who’s work have
been a lot of help in my artwork process. My artworks are still in process but I have
experimented with different techniques and mediums to figure out the type of style which would
suit my idea the best. A style which will do justice to the concept of showing the long lasting
impacts of beauty industry. To showcase the feelings and emotions which I felt. To show how
horrible the industry can make you feel about your physical appearance. The techniques that are
used are collage, abstract, realism and
stroke work. After experimenting with
these techniques I have come to the
technique of stroke work with my
subjects painted in Cubism style. I
think this technique does not only
supports my message but also show
how vibrantly and colored I see the
world beyond the physical appearance
but also how they weigh me down by
constantly being in my mind and
realizing me that despite all my joys
and laughs I will never be enough for
the world’s eyes. Deep down this
thought bothers me a lot. As for my medium, I used only paint and canvases mainly.

Conclusion:
In conclusion this research report has provided enough evidence to proof how the beauty
industry and insensitive beauty trends are making the young generation feel unworthy and
unlovable only because of how they look. This industry has left behind all the morals and values
and only focused on how you look like, and base your entire personality on it. This report main
aim was to make you realize the never ending horrible loop hole of beauty industry that
constantly make you feel unworthy. To make the young generation self aware of this, so they can
work on their talents, careers and other useful attributes rather than just trying to look like some
kind of decoration or doll which has no other motive than to attract someone and show your
social status. This report is for people to understand this issue deeply and analyze how they are
prioritizing these beauty trends and forgetting over role and responsibilities in society. The
young generation is also exposed to such a content on very early stages of life due to which their
manners, health and intellect has been deeply effected. There are no such action taken fir the
benefit of young generation so that they are not exposed to such extreme contact or topics and
can be saved from such ideas and concepts, so that they can focus on who they are as a person
rather then focus on something.
