Fourier Transform

(Part 2)

1
Dirichlet Conditions
A periodic signal HAS Fourier series IF it
satisfies :

1. x(t) is integratable over any period.

2. x(t) has only finite number of maxima and
minima over any period.
3. x(t) has only finite number of discontinuities
over any period.
Example 1
Determine the complex Fourier coefficients for the
following signal:

(a) x(t ) = cos 0t

 
(b) x(t ) = cos 2t + 
 4
(c) x(t ) = cos 4t + sin 6t
Example 2
Find the Fourier Transform of the rectangular pulse
signal x(t) defined by:
1 | t | a
x(t ) = pa (t ) = 
0 | t | a
Solution
 a

Example 3
Find the Fourier Transform of the signal:

−a t
(a) x(t ) = e a0

Solution (a)
Signal x(t) can be rewritten as:
−a t e − at t 0
x(t ) = e =  at
e t0
Then, 0 
X ( ) =  e e at − jt
dt +  e −at e − jt dt
− 0

0 

dt +  e −( a + j )t dt
− 0

= + = 2
a − j a + j a +  2
Solution (b)
From Euler’s Formula,
1 j0t 1 − j0t
x(t ) = cos 0t = e + e

Fourier Transform is:
1 1
X ( ) = 2 ( − 0 ) + (2 ( + 0 ) )
( )
2 2
= ( ( − 0 )) + ( ( + 0 ))
0 = 2 / 3
