book
Instructions
• Print pages double-sided on A4 paper, then cut pages in half width-ways.
• Fold each half-page along the centre-line, stack the folded pages into the correct
order (use the page numbers to help you) and bind to form an A6 sized book as
shown.

• This is an example of the little handmade phonetic storybooks that are referred to
in Muriel Dwyer's booklet "A Path for the Exploration of Any Language" and also in
David Gettman's book "Basic Montessori".
• This sample book can be used by a child to practise reading after they know all the
key sounds of the sandpaper letters, and have started to learn the puzzle words.
(In addition to the single letter sounds, they should recognise the phonograms ai,
ee, ie, oa, ue, ar, or, er, ou, oy, sh, ch, th, qu.) (At this stage, the child has already
practised reading words with the Object Boxes and Action Cards.)
• Reading these simple books give children a sense of accomplishment - they realise
they can now read an entire book. The story lines are very short and simple and
are written in such a way that only known phonograms are included.
• At the back of the book is printed all puzzle words included in the book; the child
will need to have learnt these in order to read this book.
• These books would normally include illustrations. Either you or the child can add
simple illustrations to each blank page opposite the text (after the book is
collated). Once the child is a more confident reader, drawing the illustrations after
reading will demonstrate his/her reading ability and comprehension.
