What is Sustainability ?
Sustainability is defined as: “the integration of
environmental health, social equity and economic vitality
in order to create thriving, healthy, diverse and resilient
communities for this generation and generations to
come. The practice of sustainability recognizes how these
issues are interconnected and requires a systems
approach and an acknowledgement of complexity.”

Sustainability in Business
In business; sustainability refers to doing business without
negatively impacting the environment, community, or society
as a whole.
Sustainability in business generally addresses two main categories:
The effect business has on the environment
The effect business has on society
The goal of a sustainable business strategy is to make a positive
impact on at least one of those areas. When companies fail to
assume responsibility, the opposite can happen, leading to
issues like environmental degradation, inequality and
social injustice.
Sustainable businesses consider a wide array of
environmental, economic, and social factors when making
business decisions. These organizations monitor the
impact of their operations to ensure that short-term
profits don’t turn into long-term liabilities.

The Project of
Apple 2030
It is aimed to achieve net zero emissions across all carbon footprints by focusing on
recycled and renewable materials, clean electricity and low-carbon shipping Jul.
Stages:
1. They design their products with recycled and renewable materials. Recycled and
renewable materials have a smaller carbon footprint than materials obtained from
mining. It reduces dependence on mining by obtaining recycled or renewable content
sources.
Level of Progress: 22% of the materials in Apple products shipped are obtained from
recycled or renewable sources, while all electricity used in production is obtained
from renewable energy sources.
2. Investments are being made in global renewable energy projects from all over
the world to cover the amount of electricity used to power and charge products.
Moreover, these products are being made much more energy-efficient.
Level of Progress: By investing in projects such as the IP Radian Solar project, they
are able to meet 100% of the consumer's estimated electricity usage for Mac Mini and
certain Apple Watch options.

3. A large part of the carbon footprint released is due to the electricity used in
the production of its products. That's why its suppliers are switching to
renewable electricity generated from solar, wind and other sources.
Progress Level: More than 320 suppliers have committed to using 100%
renewable electricity sources by 2030.
4. They make their packages more compact by removing plastic from the
packaging process.
In addition, priority is given to low-carbon shipping methods such as sea route,
rail systems and electric vehicles.
Progress Level: More than 97% of the packaging in use today is fiber-based.
5. It is aimed to recover vital materials by developing such technologies,
especially the disassembly robot Daisy. Daisy is a robot that can Deconstruct a
total of 29 different iPhone models, including various models between the
iPhone 5 and iPhone 14 Pro. Thus, these materials can be recycled and reused.
Progress Level: Approximately 40 thousand metric tons of electronic materials
were recycled in 2023. In addition, 12.8 million devices and accessories were
sent to new owners in 2023 for reuse. Again, 22% of the materials in the
products shipped in 2023 were obtained from recycled and renewable sources.
‘Apple 2030’
6. It is aimed to expand this category with new products by forming a
carbon neutral product series.
Level of Progress: Since 2015, a reduction of more than 55% in CO₂
emissions has been calculated in the entire carbon footprint.
The technology giant announced that it will achieve greenhouse gas
reduction equivalent to the removal of a total of 3 million cars from the
roads within a year thanks to sustainable energy efforts, and promised to
work with renewable energy in all its products in 25 countries with 213
production partners.
Progress Level: 18.5 million metric tons of CO₂e emissions have been
prevented thanks to the Supplier Energy Program. In addition, a 20%
reduction in product shipment emissions has been calculated compared to
2022.
In addition, Apple is investing directly in the 930-hectare IP Radian Solar
project in the US state of Texas. After the construction, which is expected
to be completed this year, the project will generate 300 megawatts of
renewable electricity.
If we look at it in a general framework, Apple is directing its arguments
to these areas by drawing special attention to some issues today. These
are; Water conservation, Increasing renewable energy and electricity
sources, reducing carbon emissions, Properly managing their share of the
climate crisis, increasing green technology equipment, making investments
in order to democratize access to renewable energy.

sustainability initiative, which operates in 163 countries and has local
networks in more than 70 countries.
• It is the first airline that can be included in IENVA, which is an
environmental management system specific to airlines, by directly
obtaining the highest level certificate of the program.
• They participate in the Carbon Transparency Project (CDP) Climate
Change Program in accordance with the principles of transparency and
accountability.
They voluntarily monitor and report the emissions from all international
flights within the scope of the ”Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Program
for International Aviation".
• As signatories of the ”Global Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
Declaration", they have been using biofuels Decently since 2022 and
providing R&D support for the development of these fuels.
• As the first and only airline included in the BIST
Sustainability 25 Index, they have been maintaining their

voluntary emission reduction standard in the world. To
date, more than 200 million tons of carbon and other

carbon offset projects in more than 80 countries. A
project with a Gold Standard certificate contributes to
sustainable development.
