I. PAST SIMPLE
1. When we use Past Simple tense?
We use Past simple tense:
- To talk about a completed action in the past.
Ex: I met my wife on a rainy day. I went to Paris last year.
- For events that were true for some time in the past.
-Ex: I lived in New York for 5 years. I didn’t like vegetables when I was a child.
- Describe habits in the past.

Ex: Five years ago, I used to smoke a lot.
- Talk about a list of completed actions in the past:

Ex: Ryan came in, took off his coat and sat down.
Ann opened the door and was surprised at the present.

2.2.1. Regular Verbs
How to make a regular verb in Past Simple?

 + ed
Watch – watched
Push – pushed
 Verbs ending in –e: +d
Type – typed
Love – loved
 Verbs ending in –y:
 if there is a vowel before the -y: +ED
Play – played
Enjoy – enjoyed
 if there is a consonant before the -y: change –y to –ied
Study – studied
Cry – cried
 Verbs ending in a vowel + a consonant (except w, x, y):
 One-syllable verbs: double the consonant and add “ed”
Stop – stopped
Bat - batted
 two-syllable verbs:
The last syllable is stressed: permit - permitted
The last syllable is not stressed: Listen – listened

II. PAST CONTINUOUS

1. When we use Past Continuous tense?
We use the Past Continuous to:
- Talk about an action that was in progress at a specific time in the past.
Ex: At 5 p.m. yesterday, it was raining. At midnight, I was driving home.
- describe an unfinished action that was interrupted by another event or action.

Ex: I was having a beautiful dream when the alarm clock rang.
- Describe two or more long actions that were happening at the same time in the past.
Ex: When I was playing the piano, my mother was sleeping on the sofa.
