GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
This document presents the structural analysis of the starboard crane seat of F.P.S.O. Unit Petrobras 54
placed at the aft part of the cargo region. The crane seat is placed, between Frame 60 & 61.
The structural analysis of the crane seat includes strength, buckling and fatigue, all of these included in this
document.
The previous revision of this analysis was performed for a crane pedestal height of 60500 mm from
BL instead of 53000 mm from BL as shown in the drawing I-DE-3010.68-1350-140-JUR-071 rev. 0.
This assumption was done due to the crane pedestal height uncertainty at the time of the crane
pedestal analysis. The final crane pedestal height now defined is 58600 mm from BL as shown in
the drawing I-DE-3010.68-1350-140-JUR-071 rev. A which is lower than the value adopted for the
analysis. This way, this analysis remains valid and the results do not need to be modified.
The mesh size of the 3D-FE model was refined in order to permit the analysis of stress, deformation and
buckling.
The model was built in order to get as less triangle elements as possible, at maximum 15% of the elements.
The aspect ratio of the elements will not be less than 1:2.
The design loading conditions are according Petrobras requirements stated in PSR and also with
requirements stated on ABS Rules.
MODEL GEOMETRY
The model geometry extends longitudinally from crane pedestal center to approximately 2 (two) frames
away fore and aft, which means that the model have length of approx. 26,5 meters.
Transversely, the model extends from the half distance of the longitudinal BHD. to the side shell.
This length is sufficient to disregard the effect of the crane loads away from this region.
The crane seat (between frames 60 & 61) model is presented in figure 1. The model has two types of
elements, distributed as follow:
BOUNDARY CONDITIONS
It was applied to all the nodes located at the extremities of the model, translations and rotations extracted
from the equivalent nodes of the model representing the cargo region (see reference 6).
All the loads existent in the cargo region model inside the regions delimited by the nodes equivalent to the
extremities nodes were also applied in the crane seat model.
In way to represent the structure of N01 Main Deck where the crane is supported, 2 (two) spring elements
were modeled.
The rigidity of the spring was obtained from the N01 Main Deck model. The following rigidity factors were
adopted as follows:
SECTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS
All the shell plating such as main deck, pedestal plating, main girders web and main brackets plating were
modeled as thick shell elements (bending plates).
The plating stiffeners, faceplates of main girders and other any minor structural elements were modeled as
beam elements (bending and axial line elements).
The sectional characteristics of the elements were considered as net ones, both for thick shell and beam
elements.
Net thickness was considered as the gross thickness minus the corrosion margins defined at
Reassessment of Midship Section Rule Calculation. The corrosion margin considered in the crane seat
analysis was 2 (two) millimeters for all model.
Annex I of this report presents view plots of the sectional characteristics of the model.

LOADING CONDITIONS
This analysis was accomplished with the requirements of Petrobras and ABS for ship structures. This way,
this document presents the loading conditions required by ABS and Petrobras, which were compared to
generate a loading condition list to attend Petrobras and ABS requirements considering no redundancy.
Maximum static and dynamic forces and moments at crane base (pedestal top) due to crane operation;
Static and dynamic forces and moment at crane base (pedestal top) due to crane operation;
Pressure on crane and pedestal due to wind for static and dynamic conditions.
Sea pressure acting on the side shell and crane pedestal base.
Petrobras Requirements
The Petrobras requirements about design loading conditions are stated in PSR, item 3.1, which presents
the following loading conditions list:
Design Operation Condition (DOC) – operation condition from maximum draft to minimum draft combined
with wave loads for a 1-year return period in head sea and crossed sea;
Design Extreme Condition (DEC) – operation condition from maximum draft to minimum draft combined
with wave loads for a 100-year return period in head sea and crossed sea;
Beam Sea condition (BSC) – operation condition from maximum draft to minimum draft combined with
wave loads for a beam sea wave height of 4,5m, zero-up cross period of 8,0 s;
The Petrobras requirements for crane pedestal and seats design are stated in PSR present the following
loading condition list according API-2C;
ABS requirements
The ABS requirement according to Guide For Certifications of Cranes item 2.1 –1991.
The loading considered in this model were combined and defined in item, Summary of Loading Conditions.
The loads considered in each load case can be divided in the following:
Based on the Cargo Region Structural Analysis, the maximum hull deformation was applied to the region
analyzed.
Wind loads
The load due to wind in crane pedestal were applied in the model as uniform distributed nodal loads acting
on the pedestal. The wind load follows the ABS MODU 2002 P.3 Sec. 2 3/2.1.2
The Analysis of structure considers that wind is applied aligned with the crane boom load. The wind load
varies according to the rotation of the crane load. This assumption leads to a more conservative analysis.
Wind Pressure:
P= f Vk2 Ch Cs
F =0.611
Vk =Wind Velocity Vk = 30.84m/s
Cs = shape coefficient Cs = 1.5
Ch = height coefficient Ch = 1.3
Using the pressure, P, and the wind incident area, A, the maximum load force applied in the area is:
F=PxA
The wind incident area, on both models, is approximately: A = h x d; h and d are height and diameter of
pedestal, respectively.
Pj = F/n1
n1 = number of nodes positioned along the vertical extension of the pedestal: 891 nodes.
Note: The nodal forces are constant along the height of pedestal crane.
Wind Loads:
Crane Loads
The load due to starboard crane operation and crane weight (static/dynamic) was applied in the model in
one node positioned at the center of the pedestal top. This node distributes the loads to all the nodes that
compose the pedestal top though a rigid element.

The crane reaction forces in operation conditions according to reference are given in table below:
X – Longitudinal direction;
Y – Transversal direction;
Z – Vertical direction.
It was used to apply in the pedestal top of the model the largest force and moment components considering
all the cases described above, so the load reactions were applied according to the boom direction.
The envelope loads were applied with Fx force aligned with the azimuth direction angle.
It was considered a sea pressure according to the pressures extracted from the global structural analysis.
Pedestal Weight
The accelerations used in this analysis were extracted from Hydralift document, “Reaction Forces –

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF CRANE SEAT (STDB)
Considering the Petrobras requirements, the loading conditions were idealized considering the worst
condition, which mean largest load, for environmental loads and crane operating loads. It was considered
the maximum loading applied in the pedestal when the crane is operating (DOC), and the environmental
load which requires 100-year return period. The loading conditions are described as follow:
CRITERIA
Allowable Stresses:
The Allowable Stresses, according to ABS Rules Part 5 Section 2 item 5/ 2A.5.2 is
σinst ≤ Sm σy
Where,
σinst = installed Von Mises stress for each element of the 3D-FE model.
Buckling Criteria
The buckling criteria will follow the ABS Rules item 5-1-5/5. for plate elements. Additionally, the column
buckling criteria, according to ABS Guide for Certification of Cranes, item 2.5.4 was used.

ni = number of stress cycles in stress block i with constant stress range Δσi;
Ni = number of cycles to failure at constant stress range Δσi;
k = number of stress blocks = 8 blocks (0 deg., 45 deg., 90 deg., 135 deg., 180 deg., 225 deg., 270 deg.,
315deg.)
The total number of cycles adopted for the fatigue analysis is 125000 cycles. The number of cycles was
equally divided into the eight blocks leading to the following distribution:
For constant amplitude loading, the number of cycles to failure for a given stress range Δσ, is determined
by using the SN-curve.
The locations most stressed from the stress analysis were analyzed for the fatigue.
In order to be conservative during the analysis the F2 curve was used for all the connections, except for the
connection between crane pedestal and side shell deck where F Curve was adopted. The S-N curve
parameters were obtained from ABS Rules, Part5, Chapter 1, Appendix 1, item 5.7. This way, the
calculation of the Ni was performed using the following formulation:
Where,
From the BR’s safety factors applied the damage formulation the following allowable damage was
considered at the analysis:
The ABS requirement is less conservative than BR’s ones. ABS requires a safety factor of 3 for the crane
design as there is no areas where it is not possible to access.
All Crane connections were considered as special design area with an allowable damage of 0.25.

The stresses are presented in this report as solid shaded views of the model containing the Von Mises,
normal and shear stresses in N/mm2 for plate elements. These solid shaded views are shown for the
envelope output set, which contains the maximum stresses for each element.
This report also present tables containing the maximum installed stress for all the loading conditions
analyzed of the critical model elements for each relevant part of the model, such as: main deck, transverse
frames, crane frame and Girders (60 and 61), crane pedestal, and Side Shell.
The usage factor values for X and Y (maximum & minimum) normal stresses, XY Shear Stress and Von

This buckling analysis was performed following ABS Rules and considering the principal stresses acting on
each element for a plate dimensions equivalent to the structural panel which the element represents.
The analysis was performed for the main deck panels near the crane pedestal and at crane frame.
The outputs for the buckling analysis present ratios between the installed normal stresses and the
calculated critical buckling stresses for each one of the cases defined on ABS Rules. These ratios must be
less than one to satisfy buckling criteria.
The bi-axial compression buckling criteria was performed considering the ratio between the installed σy
normal stress and the maximum σy normal stress calculated when the normal σx is the installed σs normal
stress. This ratio must be less than one.
The values for plate dimensions a and b adopted were the criticaliest ones for buckling evaluation and are
presented together with the buckling verification.

Dear Sirs,
Regarding ABS Letter 549(H)/1140/2003(OS-4), dated 7 July 2003, which includes additional comments on
document, I-MC-3010.62-1350-942-JUR-119 Rev. 0 (I-MC-PP750-ST-1D12-213) “Structural Analysis of
Crane Seat (Port)”, please, see the information requested on the next pages.

Item I203 – The maximum design reaction loads of the deck crane are to be confirmed upon ABS approval
of the crane in association with the issuance of the “Register of Lifting appliance”.
The approval of the offshore crane in compliance with “Register of Lifting appliance” is a scope that must be
covered by the Crane Supplier (Hydralift) and ABS.
Item I205 – The spring’s rigidity used in the model in order to represent the influence of the Cargo
Area/Main deck structure is to be confirmed later.
The spring’s rigidity was obtained from the model presented at I-MC-3010.62-1350-942-JUR-103, Rev 0,
“Structural Calculation of Cargo Area”.
It was applied a reference load at the top of the pedestal modeled together with the cargo area structure
longitudinally and transversely. From these load condition it was obtained the deflections of the connection
point of the pedestal and the cargo area.
Based on the Hook’s Law, it was obtained the spring’s rigidity as per the equation below presented.
F = k*x
F
k=
x
where,
F – reference force
x – point displacement
k – rigidity.
Based on the above assumption, the following spring’s rigidities were obtained.
Based on this values it was compared the deflections obtained at the cargo area model with the ones
obtained from the crane model, which were the same.
Item I206 – The adequacy of the existing shell plating at the joints with the crane foundation is to be verified
for the possibility of lamellar tearing. Please comment.
According to the analysis of the crane structure and foundation, the side shell plate does not exceed 60% of
the normal stresses allowable limit for the design of the structure. These results comply with the ABS
requirements for lamellar tearing. This way, it is not necessary include Z-plate at the side shell. The next
table shows the maximum installed stresses at the side shell plate and the allowable limits which were used
to the analysis. Additionally, X-normal and Y-normal stress plots for the side shell connection region are
presented.
Item I207 – We have noted that the accelerations values imposed on the model are not in accordance with
document I-MC-3010.62-9310-942-JUR-022 Rev. 0 “Acceleration calculation at process plant, equipment,
cranes, etc. Please, clarify.
The acceleration values presented at the analysis report refers to the acceleration values informed by the
crane vendor. This way the maximum value differs from the ones informed at document I-MC-3010.62-
9310-942-JUR-022 Rev. 0 “Acceleration Calculation at process plat, equipment, cranes, etc.”. The next
table compares the acceleration values used at the analysis and the maximum ones obtained from the
acceleration calculation report.
From the comparison table presented it could be seen that the differences are not significant for the
calculation. The crane operation must occur for a DOC limiting condition. Therefore, even when the
extreme DEC acceleration values are used for the analysis no significant alteration occur at the extreme
stresses found.
In way to see the alteration at the stress magnitude, three load condition which contains only the
acceleration difference found was performed. These loads conditions are as follows:
Load Case A –
x acc – 0.223 m/s2
y acc – 1.889 m/s2
Load Case B –
z acc – 1.018 m/s2
y acc – 1.738 m/s2
Load Case C –
y acc – 1.814 m/s2
The next stress plots presents the maximum stress found. It could be seen that no significant increase
occurred. Maximum of 4.67 N/mm2, 4.81 N/mm2 and 4.29 N/mm2, were found respectively for the Load
Cases A, B and C at the extremities of the model.

This way the alteration at the acceleration values will not induce significant stresses to the model leading to
quite similar results. Based on this assumption, it is our understanding that no additional calculation is
required.
