INTERNATIONAL LAW MOOT COURT COMPETITION, 2023


6th October- 8th October 2023

MOOT REPORT

The Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law has always envisioned serving the society
through reforms in legal services by way of preparing professionally competent lawyers. The
6th edition of Surana and Surana and RGNUL International Law Moot Court Competition was
organised in continuance to fulfil this vision and keep the essence of learning in RGNUL alive.
Mooting being an integral part of a law student’s life finds a regular mention at RGNUL. This
year RGNUL was awarded the Richard R. Baxter Award for the Respondent Memorial and the
Alona E. Evans Award for the second best overall memorial at the 63rd edition of the Philip C.
Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. We also won the South-Asia Regional
Rounds of 16th Foreign Direct Investment International Arbitration Moot & qualified for the
octa finals at the 20th Willem C. Viz East Commercial Arbitration Moot. To further the mooting
culture at a national level, the University organized the 6th edition of Surana and Surana and
RGNUL International Law Moot Court Competition.

Surana & Surana International Attorneys, Chennai, India has consistently demonstrated a
commitment to delivering prompt relief to its clientele. It has earned the esteemed reputation
of being the “first choice” and the “go-to” firm for legal advice by top clients from “MSME to
MNC” in South India. Actively contributing to the sustenance of the mooting culture, Surana
and Surana International Attorneys have established a benchmark of excellence.

In the 6th edition of this moot a total of 31 teams registered for the moot which was reflective
of the enthusiasm, interest and preparedness exhibited by young mooters. This prompted us to
conduct the moot from 6th October - 8th October, 2023. This 6th edition of Surana and Surana
and RGNUL International Law Moot Court Competition was conducted virtually from 6th
October - 8th October, 2023.

Under the guidance of our Hon’ble officiating Vice Chancellor and Respected Registrar, Prof
(Dr.)Anand Pawar, Respected Mr. Preetam Surana, Advocate and Head Academic Initiatives,
Surana & Surana International Attorneys, and the Faculty Coordinator of the Moot Court
Committee, Dr. Geetika Walia, the 6th edition sought to test the oratory and research skills of
the participating teams.

The Moot Court Competition witnessed the participation of 30 teams from institutes across the
nation. The event was spread over three days, i.e., from 6-8 October, 2023. The draw of lots
and exchange of memorials was conducted on October 6 for the preliminary rounds was
conducted on October 7.

On October 7, the teams participated in two intellectually demanding and gruelling preliminary
rounds which were adjudged by an eminent panel of academicians & practising advocates who
are our Alumni. The Preliminary Rounds were followed by the Quarter-Final Rounds which
were organized in the afternoon of October 7, wherein the top 8 teams qualified were adjudged
by a highly specialised panel of academicians and lawyers.

These rounds were then followed by the Semi-finals wherein the top 4 teams qualified. The
quarter final and semi-final rounds were knock out rounds where the teams pushed hard for a
straight win against their opponents.

The top 4 teams which advanced to the semi-finals after an interesting round of quarter finals
were:

1. IL 03 OP Jindal Global University

2. IL 07 Asian Law College, Noida

3. IL 10 Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur

4. IL 31 Symbiosis Law School, Noida

The rounds were adjudged by three judge benches each consisting of our Alumini, senior
professors and practicing lawyers. The teams were thoroughly tested on their knowledge of law
and facts. The two teams which sustained the thrilling semi-finals were:

1. IL31 Symbiosis Law School, Noida

2. IL03 OP Jindal Global University, Sonipat


The Riveting final rounds were organised on October 8, 2023 and were presided over by a three
Judge Bench consisting of:

1. Hon’ble Mr. Justice Rajendra Menon

2. Prof. (Dr.) A David Ambrose

3. Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha
