History:
Region 2, or Cagayan Valley, in the Philippines, has a history deeply rooted in pre-colonial
indigenous societies. Spanish colonization began in the late 16th century, with Juan de Salcedo's
exploration and the establishment of Ciudad Nueva Segovia (now Lal-lo) in 1581 marking a
significant turning point. The region's administrative boundaries shifted over time, with the creation
of Isabela and Nueva Vizcaya provinces in the 19th century. Throughout its history, Cagayan Valley
has been shaped by its strategic location, fertile lands, and the diverse cultural traditions of its
inhabitants, including the Ivatans of Batanes and other indigenous groups, alongside later arrivals
like the Ilocano.
