SAFETY
BRIEFING
General Requirements
1. Be properly prepared to do the
experiment scheduled for that day.
2. There will be no smoking, using CELL
PHONES, drinking, chewing gum, or
eating in the laboratory.
3. Do not touch your face, handle contact
lenses, apply cosmetics or put your
fingers in your mouth.
4. Always wash your hands after handling
viable material.
General Requirements
5. Avoid working alone in the laboratory.
6. Horseplay will not be tolerated. Avoid
distracting others that are working.
7. At the end of each lab session, clean your lab
bench, put away all materials, and wash your
hands thoroughly before leaving the
laboratory.
8. Wastes should be deposited in appropriate
receptacles.
8. Gloves and lab coats are to be removed prior
to leaving the laboratory and may not be worn
in non-laboratory areas.
Accident in laboratory
Research assistant in UCLA, in 2009, died
to the fatal tragedy in laboratory due to
the misconduct of handling the Tert-
Butyllithium, (t-BuLi for short) is what is
known as pyrophoric: it ignites
spontaneously in air. A doctor later testified
she had suffered second- and third-degree
burns to nearly half her body (with organ
failure!!)

The misconducts are due to NOT using

the lab coat, NOT referring to the
product information (bulletin, MSDS),
using inappropriate equipment etc.

This fatal accident could be avoided, but

the irresponsible action from the
laboratory user is always the reason for
any tragedy.
In 2014, workers at the USDA's National
Animal Disease Center in Ames, Iowa, were
potentially exposed to leptospira, a
dangerous bacteria, because they didn't
follow basic safety procedures (didn't
wear appropriate personal protective
equipment (PPE) and was working with the
pathogen on a benchtop instead of inside a
biosafety cabinet).

Leptospira bacteria can be found

worldwide in soil and water.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that
affects humans and animals. It is caused by
bacteria of the genus Leptospira.

Without treatment, Leptospirosis can lead

to kidney damage, meningitis
(inflammation of the membrane around
the brain and spinal cord), liver failure,
respiratory distress, and even death!
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE):
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE):
Best Practice in Laboratory
1. Observe all laboratory signs and chemical labels for
required protective equipment.
2. Safety glasses or chemical splash goggles will be
worn at all times when performing laboratory work.
3. Wearing contact lenses is discouraged.
4. Always wear gloves when handling any chemicals
or microorganisms.
5. You are required to wear laboratory coats while
working to prevent contaminating your clothes.
6. Wear shoes that cover the entire foot; NO sandals
or open shoes.
7. Tie back long hair and confine loose clothing to
keep away from flames and chemicals.
Safety first!!:
1. Unauthorized experiments are prohibited.
Perform the experiments as directed by your
instructor.
2. Never take chemicals, supplies, or
equipment out of the laboratory.
3. Students are not allowed to enter the
Chemical Stockrooms.
4. Know where the Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
are for your chemicals. SDS contain
information that you will need in case there is
an emergency.
5. Never taste or smell a chemical.
Spills and Other Lab Incidents:
1. Learn the locations and operation of emergency equipment.
This includes eyewash, fire extinguishers, etc.
2. Know what to do in case of an emergency.
3. Know how to exit the building in case of an emergency.
4. Report ALL accidents, injuries, and near misses (close-
calls) to your instructor immediately
5. Treat burns immediately by putting the burned area under
cold water for at least 15 minutes.
6. Clean up all spills immediately and notify your instructor.
This includes water. In the event that a chemical is
spilled/splashed on your eyes, skin or body, IMMEDIATELY
rinse the affected area for 15 minutes.
7. If your skin is exposed to a viable material, wash the
affected area with antibacterial soap and hot water.
8. In case of accidental ingestion, notify instructor immediately
and call for emergency medical services (Dial 999).
9. Have the SDS ready for personnel to determine the
necessary course of treatment.

ENV ENG LAB APPROACH

OPEN-ENDED
LABORATORY
(OEL)
An open-ended laboratory is
where students are given the freedom to develop
their own experiments, instead of merely following
the already set guidelines from a lab manual or
elsewhere. It will create the students to think
critically

justification.

Differences between approaches

This implementation was in agreement with both the Engineering Accreditation

Council [1] and Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) [2]
engineering accreditation criteria requirements.

students use their own initiative and creativity to design their own experiments [5-6].

INSTRUCTION
In this lab sheet, it has ONE (1) open
ended laboratory instructions to be
performed. Students must plan and
organize for solutions by integrating the
fundamental knowledge of Environmental
Engineering and technical skill with
appropriate laboratory testing equipment
and methodology to fulfill the requirement
of each open ended instruction. Students
must consult/present and get approval
against the equipment operational
procedure and type of data collection
before conducting any testing. Students
are reminded to emphasize safety and
good ethic when handling the equipment
and other facilities in Environmental
Engineering Laboratory. All findings must
be verified, prepared and fulfilled the
requirement of report criteria and others
from respective laboratory instructions
