D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #1

Now, it seems that you have an idea about the lesson for today, am I - Yes Ma’am!
right?

The lesson for today is about the different functions of

Communication. But before that, we should know first the meaning of
(Everyone is reading.)
function. Everyone please read.

Communication functions refer to how people use language for

different purposes. The function of communication may appeal to
heart/emotion or your memory.

Yes, thank you. We use communication everyday by expressing how

we feel and what we think. Clear?

That is the meaning of communication functions, and now let's move

forward in tackling about the different functions of communication.

*The presentation of lesson on the different functions of

communication will be done in Filipino and Hiligaynon.

FIVE FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION:

1. Regulation/Control

-This simply means to control. When the very purpose of

communication is to control a certain behavior, then you can tell
that it demonstrates regulation.

I have here some lines that portrays regulation or control in

communication. Please read.
( Everyone is reading)
Parents’ Instruction to their child

“Wash the dishes now, or else I won’t allow you to go to the party
later.”

Friends giving advice on what to do

“Move on. He doesn’t love you anymore”

Comprehension Question:

a. Why do you think the first line is an example of control? -The child is controlled by the parents
reminding that if he don’t do the task, then he
How about you? Kayo ba ay palaging sinasabihan ng inyong mga can’t go to the party.
magulang katulad ng nasa halimbawa?

Aside sa examples, ano pa gid ang iban ninyo nga nabal-an nga
example sang regulation ukon naga control sa communication?

2. Social Interaction
(Everyone is reading)
- This is a simple function of communication that primarily
aims to establish social relationships or bonds between
individuals. There are two or more individual exchanging
conversation.

When you are communicating with your family, friends and colleagues
that is already an example of social interaction because you
communicate to socialize.

I have here sets of examples under social interaction.

Marriage Proposal
“Will you marry me?”
Example of social interaction
Invitation
“Would you like some coffee, tea, or me?”
Not an example of social interaction

Comprehensive Question:

What can you observe in the picture?

Is this an example of social interaction? Why?

Great! Always remember, nga bisan damo pa kamo sa isa ka lamesa if They are sitting in one table but they are not
wala interaction between the group, indi na sya ma consider nga social communicating at all.
interaction since communication doesn’t take place.
It’s not an example of social interaction
because they are busy with their own activity.
3. Motivation
- This function appeal to the mind for the very purpose of
changing one’s belief or desire in accomplishing something.

Kamo students, sin-o inyo motivators? Sin-o ang gahatag sa inyo

strength everytime nga feeling nyo indi nyu na kaya tapuson ang is aka
task? Who can share?

Yes, that’s true. Everyone of us may ara gid person to lean on in the
midst of our uncertainties and we should always be grateful that they
exist.

4. Emotional Expression

This function simply wants to express emotion or strong feelings

because of a particular situation or happening. May it be any emotion,
anger; pain; shock; happiness and sadness. Whatever it is, as long as
it expresses emotion, then it is under emotional expression.

For instance, whenever we feel happy or sad, we tend to decide things

out of emotion. This is very evident kung naga away kmu sang inyo
jowa and then ma hambal ka nga break nata but you really don’t mean
it, it’s just only that in that time you are stressed of the situation.

Here are some examples of Emotional Expression:

(Student volunteered)
Who can read the following with the certain emotion it requires?

OUCH! ON NO! REALLY? YES!!

(Student volunteered)
Now let’s apply it. Example : Oh no! I forgot my wallet. You need to
create your script. Okay? Now any volunteers please.
(Student Clapping)
Great Job Everyone! Give yourselves a round of applause.

5. Information
- This function simply focuses on transferring information. If
the very purpose is to simply pass information or idea for the
benefit of the knowledge or one’s awareness, then this is
information function.

The level of authority in this function does not matter that much
regardless of the age, social status, gender, culture. One can execute
information function.

An example of information function is what we are doing right now,

wherein I am discussing the different kinds of function and you can
gain knowledge from me. That is how information function works.

Comprehension Question:

a. What have you learned regarding the lesson we discussed? There are 5 functions of communication.
Fantastic! Mainly, Control, social interaction,
motivation, emotional expression and
information.

Yes Ma’am
Do you understand now the purpose of different communication?
None
Is there any question before we proceed to the activity?

Very good!
