Glossary of Mathematical Terms


Mathematical Term Definition
Amplitude Half the distance between the maximum and minimum values for a periodic function.
Angle The measure of the amount of rotation between two lines.
Area An amount of surface measured in square units.
Calculate Perform the indicated mathematical operations to find a value.
Centre The point on a circle that is the same distance from all the points on the circle.
Circle A set of points that are all the same distance from the centre.
Diagram A picture (drawing), a visual model of a situation.
Diagonal The diagonal of a rectangle joins two corners through the interior of the rectangle
Domain The set of all possible values for the independent variable (𝑥).
Exact A value is exact if it has not been rounded (usually not a decimal).
Intersection point The point where two curves touch or cross (intersect).
Inverse The inverse of a function reverses the effect of the function.

Line segment A portion of a line between two points.
Maximum The greatest value.

Perimeter The distance around a figure.
Quadratic A function from the base function 𝑥 2 , with a graph that has the shape of a parabola.
Radius The distance from the centre of a circle to any point on the circle.
Range The set of all possible values of the dependent variable (𝑦).
Restriction Any values that will create an undefined value for a function.
Roots (x-intercepts) The point(s) where the graph of a function touches the x-axis.
Slope The measure of the steepness of a line.
Transformation An operation that changes a figure. Transformations include translation (shift/slide), dilation
(stretches or compressions), and reflections.
Unit Refers to units of measurement such as metres (m), kilometres (km), including area (𝑚2 )
Volume A measure of the capacity of a three dimensional figure, in cubic units.
Whole number A (properly rounded) number with no decimal places. Like 5, 100, 12, etc.
