1) What is the function of the ENTER key?


Ans) The Enter key is used to send the cursor to the next line or execute a command or

2) How will you prevent others from using your computer?


Ans) The following are the ways to prevent others from using our computer
• Do not leave the computer open in public places.
• Set up a strong password for a better protection of your computer.
• We can also use password protection for certain important documents.
• Data should be encrypted so that it does not get in wrong hands.

3) What is an operating system? Name any three operating systems for computers. Name
any three mobile operating systems.
Ans) An operating system is a program that acts as an interface between the user and
the computer hardware and controls the execution of all kinds of programs.
• Operating System for Computers: Ubuntu, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS.
• Mobile Operating System: Apple iOS, Windows and Google Android

4) Mention any three functions of an operating system.


Ans)
1. Memory Management –It keeps tracks of primary memory, i.e., which bytes of
memory are used by which user program. The memory addresses that have already been
allocated and the memory addresses of the memory that has not yet been used.

2. Processor Management – The OS decides the order in which processes have access
to the processor, and how much processing time each process has.

3. Device Management – Keeps tracks of all devices connected to system. Allocates


devices in an effective and efficient way.

5) How is a computer file system similar to our physical file system in a school?
Ans) In any school (or office), each teacher has a separate cabinet where they keep the
files of different students or classes on separate shelves. Similarly, information on a
computer is stored in electronic files, which can be put into separate folders. It is
easier to manage the electronic files as they can be simply copied, moved, renamed or
even deleted.

6) Mention any one way in which we can create a new folder?


Ans)Steps to create a new folder:
1. Double click on the computer icon
2. Select the drive in which you want to create a new folder.
3. Window will open up showing the files and folders in the selected drive.
4. Right-click anywhere in the blank area of the right column.
5. From shortcut menu>> select new>>Folder
6. Type a name for the folder and press enter.

Ans) General Precautions to be taken while cleaning the computer components are:
➔ Always Power Off the computer system before cleaning.
➔ Never spray cleaning fluid directly on the component of the computer. First spray
the liquid on the cloth and then wipe the component.
➔ Do not allow the cleaning liquid to drip near the circuit board.
➔ Preferably use anti-static wrist band which helps to prevent building up of static
electricity near electronic device.

11) List some of the maintenance activities for the computer system.
Ans)Maintenance activities for the computer system:
 Keep the components of the computer, like keyboard, mouse, monitor etc. clean.
 Replace hardware that is not functioning properly .
 Keep food items away from the computer.
 Cables and cords should not be messed up.
 Remove unauthorized software from the computer.
 Take regular backup of the data.

12) Explain how to clean a computer on a daily basis.

• Wipe down your computer. clean your keyboard.
• Blow dust buildup out of computer vents, fans and accessories.
• Run check disk tool.
• Check surge protector.
• Keep PC ventilated.
• Back up your hard drives.
• Get antivirus software to protect from malware.

13)How can you increase the performance of a computer?


Ans) We can increase computer performance by deleting all unnecessary files and data
(temporary files and images) in the hard disk using disk cleaner software

14)Explain how Trojan Horse virus works.


Ans) A Trojan Horse disguises itself i.e., it appears to be a useful software program
but once it reaches a computer it starts behaving like a virus and destroying data.

15) Mention few ways in which a computer gets infected with virus.
Ans) A computer can get infected with virus in any of the following ways:
• Infected files
• Infected pen drives
• Infected CD/ DVD -ROM
• Through infected file attachment of e-mails.

16)What are the common signs of a virus attack?


Ans) Some of the common signs of a virus attack are:
1. Computer runs very slow.
2. There is change in the file size.
3. Computer often stops responding .
4. There is an increase in number of files (unusual).
5. Unusual error message appears on the screen.
6. Computer restarts on its own .

17) What is the use of antivirus software? Name any two commonly used antivirus software
Ans) Antivirus software is a program designed to detect and remove malicious programs
from the computer. Some examples of antivirus software are Norton Anti Virus, and
Quick Heal.
18) What are cookies?
Ans) Cookies are small files which are stored on a user’s computer when you visit a
website on the internet. These files are designed to hold data specific to a particular
client and website.

19)What is a firewall in computing?


Ans) A computer firewall could be a programmable device or software or a network
security system that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based
on user-defined security rules.

20) List the various ways you can use to protect your data.
Ans) To protect data:
 Use passwords to login to your computer: Use passwords that are difficult to guess.
 Install Anti-virus and Firewall: Anti-viruses and Firewall monitor the data coming in and
out of a computer and prevent and viruses from entering.
 Encrypt Data: This is usually done by banks and companies in which important customer
information is stored .
 Secure sites: Give details of your credit card or bank account only on secure sites.
