Problem Set 3

Due by 9pm Eastern 10/30/2024

1. Let f (x) = x3 .
(a) Show that f is continuous on R.
(b) Show that f is not uniformly continuous on R.
(c) Show that f is uniformly continuous on any bounded subset of R.
P∞
2. Show that if n=1 xn converges absolutely, then any rearrangement of
this series must converge to the same limit
3. Consider x ∈ O, where O is an open set. Prove that if {xn } is a sequence
converging to x, then all but a finite number of the terms of {xn } are
contained in O.

4. Assume K is compact and F is closed. Decide if the following sets are

definitely compact, definitely closed, both, or neither (and provide a brief
argument why).
(a) K ∩ F
(b) F C ∪ K C
(c) K − F = {x ∈ K : x ∈
/ F}
(d) K ∩ F C
5. Suppose h : R → R is continuous on R and let K = {x : h(x) = 0}. Show
that K is a closed set.

6. Let f be a function defined on all of R, and assume there is a constant c

such that 0 < c < 1 and

|f (x) − f (y)| ≤ c|x − y|

for all x, y ∈ R.

(a) Show that f is continuous on R.

1
(b) Pick some point y1 ∈ R and construct the sequence

(y1 , f (y1 ), f (f (y1 )), . . . ).

In general, if yn+1 = f (yn ), show that the resulting sequence {yn } is

a Cauchy sequence. Hence we may let y = lim yn .
(c) A fixed point of the function f is an x ∈ R such that f (x) = x. Prove
that y is the unique fixed point of f .
(d) Finally, prove that if x is any arbitrary point in R, then the sequence
(x, f (x), f (f (x)), ...) converges to y defined in (b).
